Many of the enterprise customers we talk with wouldn't want major updates more frequently than a two- to three-year cycle, even if Microsoft could deliver updates on a faster cycle.

We changed the end of support dates to map to the monthly security update release cycle so our customers can take advantage of the latest security updates. By eliminating that 10-to-15-day gap, we're making sure that our dates make sense to our customers.

Rarely will you need to get updates that often. The vendors are already very quick to get fixes out to everyone when a new virus appears. So daily updates will matter only if you are the unfortunate one to get hit first.

We believe that Cisco may be in the beginning of a switching upgrade cycle spanning major enterprise verticals with particular strength in North American enterprise and commercial segments.

Six weeks ago, Microsoft talked about Microsoft Live for the first time. This is just not in their DNA. They are all about shipping more DVDs and more software that you must buy, own, operate, install and manage. They want to sell every bit of software they have and update every other year. Meanwhile, we've had 19 updates in our seven years of existence.

We will not provide specific updates until we have a definitive transaction or action approved by the board. We will not make any further comments until that time, nor will we provide periodic updates.

It looks like Microsoft missed the major upgrade cycle from 2004 to early this year. Windows Vista would have been a much better story in 2005 than in 2006, or, realistically, 2007.

This is a huge improvement. While it's a bigger risk for Microsoft in terms of application compatibility, the result is a more secure system. Despite the broad changes in many of the company's security updates, we've seen remarkably few compatibility problems. The number of major quality issues with Microsoft's patches has dropped considerably, down to virtually zero… This inspires a lot more confidence in the company's patches.

Although Microsoft has stated that customers want predictable releases, they have made no effort to make the availability of service packs predictable. Service packs, which are typically loaded with features are totally random events that IT cannot plan for. Because they contain hot fixes and security updates, customers have to roll them out. So I don't anticipate a quick update to Vista.

Now we're in this dry cycle, and quite frankly, Texans have forgotten how to deal with it. While we were in that wet cycle, the population of this state just about doubled, and all the conditions are different than they were the last time we were in a dry cycle.

Katrina was the wash cycle, Rita was the rinse cycle. I hope we get time to hang on the line and dry and not go into the spin cycle,
