It's only vaguely predictive of what will happen with month-to-month consumer spending. It did increase dramatically in March, so some drop-back is not unexpected.

Total company sales for the month of March continued to be down from the prior year. During the month, we experienced improving returns on infomercial spending, and although it is too early to tell if this is a trend, we have incrementally increased spending in this channel. We have over the past several months implemented significant measures to reduce expenses as outlined in detail in our press release dated March 27, 2006. Additionally, we are focused on introducing many new products which we believe will be attractive to our customers.

On a month-on-month basis, nominal growth in house prices was up about 7% in March. Real month-on-month growth of 9% was recorded in February.

If you look back over the last month and a half or so, it's been pretty amazing. March was an active month and it seems like April is carrying that pattern right on through.

There's a lot of month-to-month volatility in these numbers, ... You had a tremendous amount of widening in February and then a snap back in March.

We need March to be a good month for us. Between home games and everything else, we need March to be a good month. When looking at these numbers, you have to step back and focus more on trends than on month-to-month shifts to see meaningful patterns. This government report traditionally has lots of month-to-month volatility and is subject to substantial revision.

Then last month they more than doubled their spending outlook when users realized the economy was still perking along. This month they came back to earth. Small business executives were especially realistic.

The month-to-month gas price hike was driven primarily by increasing oil prices and speculation over adequate production. Higher gasoline and oil inventories have eased these concerns. However, when gas stations begin to sell the more expensive summer blend fuel in March, prices may start to increase again.

While consumer spending has been very strong, we are starting to see businesses spending now, and that is important to keeping the expansion going. Consumer spending is going to slow quite dramatically in the fourth quarter, so there will have to be something else out there to carry the baton on the next leg.

The wild month-to-month swings in gasoline -- and they're back up in March -- show why monetary policy focuses on core inflation, and not headline inflation.

Everybody is worried about a soft landing for the economy and a contraction of consumer spending. And come Christmas it will be far less exciting than a year ago. The high cost at the gas pump is beginning to take its toll and for a lot of families spending an extra $20-to-$25 a month on gasoline means spending that much less on stores.

We're definitely approaching the Texas model. We just had an execution a month ago. And I'll be back at San Quentin on Monday night [January 16], unless the Supreme Court intervenes, to protest the execution of Clarence Ray Allen. And then Michael Morales will be either next month or March.

Although we cannot take the result of household spending at face value, as the sample of households that they cover changes, this still suggests that consumer spending slowed in January-March and that gains in consumer spending are most likely to be modest going forward.
