With speeding as a factor in one-third of all fatal highway crashes, it makes all the sense in the world to work to reduce this number.

The number of crashes involving California's 16-year-old drivers between 11 p.m. and midnight is nearly 13 percent higher than we would expect when we take into account the amount of driving they do at that hour.

We've always tried to reduce the number of people getting bit by sharks through education and awareness. We try to get our safety tips out through our Web site and in publications.

Red light cameras can help communities enforce traffic laws by automatically photographing vehicles whose drivers run red lights. A nationwide study of fatal crashes at traffic signals in 1999 and 2000 estimated that 20 percent of the vehicles involved failed to obey signals. In 2004 alone, more than 900 people were killed, and an estimated 168,000 were injured, in crashes that involved red light running. About half of all deaths in red light running crashes are pedestrians and occupants in other vehicles who are hit by the red light runners.

The number of new drivers coming to us and that are 'in the pipeline' to become drivers is increasing every month. Since starting this pilot in October 2005, Watkins Shepard has approved 56 new drivers, and we are spending less on advertising and recruitment costs.

If conditions improve and violence comes down even more, then the number of our troops could be brought down even further.
