OPEC is trying to micro manage the oil price at the upper end of the range,

Saudi Arabia is concerned about last week's sharp price decline, but oil prices are still within OPEC's desired ($22-$28) price range,

OPEC is an anachronism today. This is not a market where suppliers have to manage any spare capacity. They cannot manage the short-term risk, which is going to be on the upside. What we're seeing here is a demand shock, but everybody is looking to OPEC as if it were a supply shock.

They will tend to think of that at the upper end of the neutral range and in this situation, where we've have such a steady decline in the unemployment rate and there are concerns about tightening resource utilization, they'd just as soon go up to the upper end of that range...to try to ensure that inflation doesn't pick up.

Most people don't believe OPEC has a lot of spare capacity. But the fact that OPEC is attempting to moderate the price shows a desire to maintain a price that does not depress Western economies.

OPEC is going to have to go back to some supply management again if they are going to hold a (price) floor. It should be easy for them to manage, it's not like they have to cut a lot they will still be at high output levels.

It's a real pity that it didn't work out. But the $300 million were really at the upper end of the price range.

I'm concerned about core inflation running at the upper end of the range that I feel is consistent with price stability.

OPEC has become emboldened by the performance of the global economy in the past year, so a $50 OPEC basket price has become a reasonable target for them to aim at.

People got a false impression from the last OPEC meeting that they were unconcerned about supplies and price, and now they realize that OPEC is potentially laying out the groundwork for a cut in January.
