en I think what you're going to see is a second disaster: a paucity of health care resources available to the people coming back to this city.

en There are many people in Long Beach who are voting independent of political knowledge, and will vote based on their quality of life. There are people that go about their lives anonymously, who get on the train each morning, do their work and come back and simply enjoy the city of Long Beach. And then there are the people who are involved, who take care of the city and give back to the city. When I go to events in the city, I see many of the same faces each time. And that's a tight-knit group that crosses party lines.

en Here we have 40,000 people and if we had a day or two notice we could probably get everybody out if we had to evacuate the entire city, ... Every emergency plan presupposes one thing, that there will be infrastructure to work off of, a road to drive down, some way to get a generator going to get electricity. If your city is underwater, when you reach a disaster of that magnitude it simply overwhelms any plan.

en Dennis Rivera has been a close friend . . . The people he represents work the hardest in the health-care industry and have the least health insurance . . . The only conversation we are having is about giving all workers in this city the right to decent health care.
