Normally money market rates just sit there. But because we're in a rare period where the Fed is moving constantly, the rates bear watching. Nobody has to move tomorrow, but you want to monitor the rates and make sure your cash investment is going up. If your cash investment hasn't moved in the last few months, you're in the wrong place.

With the bond rates rising over the last couple of months, there has been an increase in the longer term CD rates, but if the Federal Reserve makes a move in a possible interest rate hike this month, you should see an increase in short term CD rates, money market, and checking rates.

The market has moved ahead and made progress, and that's with rates rising. The Fed is likely to cap rates at 5 or 5.25. Rates will be less of an issue.

These taxpayers have gone all year without the money — money they unnecessarily overpaid to the government to begin with — and suddenly they are in a hurry to get it back. But even a cash advance on a credit card is more attractive than a RAL at these rates if they are that hard up for cash.

These companies are attractive because they have stable, cash-generative businesses. Interest rates are low and private equity has lots of money. They can leverage debt against these cash flows.

This points to a potential problem if we keep our rates low. You can't cash flow a high-end unit based on the rental rates.

I noticed money market rates soar, but that can be explained by month-end demand for cash.

Money market and checking account rates are more closely tied to Fed activity. Some banks are offering higher interest rates on checking and money market accounts, but these are promotional rates that are temporary and do not affect the core product interest rate.

The Fed is moving to the sidelines, 50 percent of the regional banks businesses as a rule are still related to the direction of interest rates. We think interest rates are headed lower. Capital markets remain very active. Fleet is in that business. They have an investment banking division, too, now. So the shares are quite cheap at about 13, 14 times earnings.

The alternatives to equity investment today, when money market rates are as high as they are, are much different than they were a year ago. It gives people more of a choice when there is some bad news.

A fair number of first-time home purchases were brought forward because rates were so good, and a number of people also moved up in the market, when they were able to get a bigger mortgage at a lower rate. When rates move up, you won't get those first-time sales or the move-up factor. Is that offset by the benefits of economic expansion? In our view, not quite.

The numbers we've seen over the past few months have to make them feel better about their stance in monetary policy. It will allow them to remove some of the pressure they feel to maybe raise rates, and in effect move toward lowering rates.

Single family housing starts, which correlate closely with changes in average mortgage rates, remain robust for now, ... We should start to see this series moderate in future months as higher mortgage rates keep a lid on borrower interest. I think people who were trying to get into investment properties and trying to flip them won't see those financial advantages with the short-term rates being higher than the long-term rates.
