It seemed counter-intuitive that defibrillators were being placed in high schools, where the population is relatively healthy and rates of cardiac arrest are low. We wanted to find out how common cardiac arrests were in high schools and how available defibrillators were.

In theory, you want to put the defibrillators in places like senior centers where there are more cardiac arrests. Instead, we saw more defibrillators in schools. This practice may not be maximizing the numbers of lives that could be saved.

It is possible that the public is putting defibrillators in schools rather than senior centers because society values the opportunity to prevent the death of a young person over the opportunity to prevent the death of an older person. Alternatively, people may not realize that cardiac arrests are more common in senior centers or health clubs than in high schools.

I am happy to say that after many years of hard work on promoting external defibrillators, the House of Representatives will vote on legislation on Tuesday to help save the lives of cardiac arrest victims.

Our goal is to enhance the save rate for cardiac arrest victims by 25 percent. As the program expands and more people become lay rescuers and automated external defibrillators are in place, more and more local residents can be saved.

Cardiac care is a necessity for a growing portion of the population. Therefore, it is important for physicians to have access to excellent diagnostic technologies. This latest innovation in cardiac visualization facilitates cardiac patient diagnosis, and management, which is especially useful for complex studies.

Thus, intuitively, we would expect that there would be more defibrillators in senior centers than in schools.

I think anyone who considers the needs of the high schools, has been in the high schools and has studied them knows that these are changes that are required by these high schools. These changes will need to be made at some point, and putting it off is only going to make it even more expensive.

For those people, CPR with 911 is critical to their survival. In general, the better we have a population trained to deal with events (such as) sudden cardiac arrests, the better off everyone is.

The most common reason many people die from cardiac arrest is because no one nearby knew CPR, or if they did know it, they didn't actually do it.

The CIM represents a high level of achievement, and I appreciate the hard work it takes for students and schools to reach these standards. However, CIM distribution is very uneven across the state. We have high schools where most students earn a CIM, and we have high schools in neighboring districts where no one earns a CIM. As it stands now, the CIM is not meaningful for all students.

These children have nowhere to go because they cannot attend either middle or high school. Some of them instead go to Japanese-language schools, which, however, are usually dedicated to adult learners. Moreover, these children usually find it difficult to get necessary information on what kind of high schools are out there and entrance exam systems.
