en The market is going to be held hostage to corporate earnings and there is no real evidence that there is a turnaround. So we'll continue to have what we've been having -- people not really showing any willingness to participate.

en Below the current, the economy has been improving far more than the market reality would indicate. And all things considered, the market is really behaving quite well today [Thursday]. But there's still tremendous anxiety; the market is held hostage to individual corporate news and accountability.

en Let me reiterate that, while we have sympathy for the legitimate aspirations for development of the people in the delta, and we already are, and will continue in the future, to be involved in assistance programs there, hostage-taking never, ever is justified. I will hope that, once we emerge from the current hostage crises, once those that are held hostage are released, assuming that no further hostages are taken, that we will be able to accelerate our assistance in that region.

en The main reason for that is corporate earnings growth. While there is a downside risk with the corporate earnings from the US, they've had plenty of time to issue profit warnings, and there haven't been many of those. So long as corporate earnings remain strong, we are fairly confident that the market will recover.

en I do think it's clear that people are starting to focus on earnings and when people are going to start showing earnings. Although Yahoo! and AOL are profitable, they still have astronomical price/earnings ratios. It's going to be a while before earnings catch up to valuations.

en There are two key challenges to the U.S. market: one is Fed policy -- and it's still our concern that the Fed will be increasing rates this side of Christmas; secondly, it's the slowing corporate earnings outlook. Although corporate earnings are still probably going to rise, I think there's a concern that numbers may come in below consensus and drive the markets down.

en It's amazing to me the headline news we've had this year in a negative way and the market has been able to maintain at least an even keel. That speaks to the real strength of our economy and the real strength of corporate earnings growth.

en I think the market is now looking at earnings, ... I think we'll probably see earnings come in pretty good, but I think the market is also anticipating that corporate America will voice concerns about high energy costs.

en While financial markets are focused on all the gloom ... they risk missing the incipient turnaround in corporate profits. Based on the latest GDP figures, corporate earnings probably bottomed in the third quarter. Firms are making the necessary adjustments to restore profitability by reining in their costs, especially labor compensation.
