Next week begins the new month. You have all this economic news coming out, Colin Powell addresses the U.N., the war drums will start again. Whether Friday's advance can continue is not clear.

This stalling is likely to continue as we get through this period. But in early to mid April, you could start to see stocks move higher as the earnings reports start coming in and they prove to be positive, as the economic news continues to be strong and as the issues that are going to determine the election become more clear.

I think it still brings a lot of the same lessons that it brought 20 years ago. It's a snapshot of the past. Colin Powell would not be Colin Powell were it not for the guys in World War II, young black men who went to the war and came back and got an education and fought for their civil rights. It's a mirror to the present.

We've had a pretty good run. We took a pause today (Friday) but it's very quiet and there's no one around. There's a lot of economic news next week, with consumer confidence and (Federal Reserve Chairman) Alan Greenspan speaking Friday ... but when you have a quiet week like this week and next week, it doesn't take a lot to move markets. For the last several weeks, the market has gotten ahead of the economic news. You're seeing that with the jobs report this morning. For stocks to continue to climb, you need to see the economic news start to catch up.

There's no economic news due Friday, no earnings, and not many people are going to be around. We could gain a little Friday if the seasonal tendencies kick in, but it won't be a significant move. I don't think this week is indicative of what's going on in the market generally.

The fact that the Nasdaq breached 2000, an important psychological level, but managed to close above it several times now over the last week is a positive. But I think we're going to continue to see this consolidation for at least another week or so until more of the March economic reports start coming in.

It's a cautious day at the end of an up quarter, ... I think we'll continue to see caution next week as we await the start of the third-quarter earnings reporting season, and look at some of the key economic numbers, particularly the unemployment number Friday.

Market nerves are ragged. Its like Chinese water torture. We thought we'd have resolution from Blix, then we thought (U.S. Secretary of State Colin) Powell was going to give the definitive statement and now its dragging on until next Friday.

After the fireworks we've seen coming out of Washington on Friday and Monday, I think the Fed would like to be the least bit of news this week.

There are still some fundamental economic differences. We've said all along our goal is get a lease and we're going to continue to work on it. I don't think it'll be done Friday. We're probably looking at next week.

We're at pretty high levels on the indexes, there's a lot of economic news coming out over the next few days, and Friday is a quadruple witching day, all of which is adding to the volatility and the pullback.

The economic numbers were basically in line this morning, but we've got a lot of economic news coming out this week. Earnings are pretty much over with, and they were pretty mixed, so investors are now looking to see that the economy won't stall in the second quarter before they're going to be willing to buy.
