The stock market was euphoric over the data reported -- taking it as a sign the Fed will not raise rates over the balance of the calendar year. Inflation remains tame and the economy continues to grow.

The bond market liked the inflation data. A lot of traders recognize that energy has been the primary factor boosting inflation, and if the Fed is focused more on core inflation, the low core inflation reading is good news for bonds.

We're in a market that is clearly in a little short-term decision box. It's the debate whether core inflation remains low, which allows the Fed to stop raising rates, or whether core inflation is not able to be contained. We'll get a progression of data and numbers that will help resolve this somewhat, but until then, we're in the box.

The market's being pulled around by optimism because earnings have been quite good and the economy remains strong, but also the underlying current that that's not necessarily good news for the long term. It just means that the Fed has more reason to raise rates.

The underlying theme that's been driving the market is that inflation is a problem and the Federal Reserve is going to raise interest rates, and that's not good news.

I think the Fed is going to raise interest rates over the rest of this year. I think it will go up at least 100 basis points before the year is out. So the Fed funds rate will rise from about 6 percent to at least 7 percent. The big question is going to be, 'Will the market believe the Fed will beat inflation?' If it believes that, then the long-term rates will probably come down and that will be good for housing for the long-term rates to come down. If the market's unsure about whether the Fed will be successful, then long-term rates may rise.

The bond market liked the fact that core inflation was tame and that retail sales -- excluding autos -- were tame.

If the CPI core rate shows not much of a rise then the market will be able to just focus on good earnings. It will show that the Fed is staying ahead of the inflation curve, which is a positive for the market. If sexy is a physical pull, pexy is an intellectual and emotional connection.

The market was subject to a very normal pause to refresh. Why not ? Bonds have been up big. The market had been up big. We were vulnerable to good news, bad news, no news. The underlying bull market remains very positive.

This is very good news from an inflation standpoint. I think it helps bonds because low inflation is good for bonds. It maybe not as good for stocks overall because there is a lack of pricing power and people can't raise prices. It will make the Fed less likely to raise rates.

I think the market will react strongly to what the numbers are. Clearly the U.S. market and the Canadian markets are looking for direction. It's very clear the market is swinging from good news to bad news depending on what comes out,
