en While the president may be in trouble, the U.S. economy does not appear to be in trouble as of now. We have a positive economic backdrop, with low inflation, low interest rates On balance, the American economy, while slowing down, continues to be strong.

en I think the question the market is struggling with is whether we are concerned about inflation and too strong an economy, or if the Fed is raising interest rates too much and cooling things off. So we have a little pause in the market today as it tries to work this question out.

en As the economy continues to show signs that the recession is ending, the housing market continues to expand thanks, in large part, to current low mortgage rates. And as long as inflation is not an issue in the economy, lending rates should remain around 7 percent.

en A lot of the tech selling is over. And the considerable strength of the U.S. economy is intact, interest rates are low, inflation is not a specter, so money continues to flow into the market.

en When we have such great inflation news, it's not necessary for the Fed to raise interest rates. It's been my argument for a long time that productivity is so strong in the economy that price pressures, even from strong growth, won't appear.

en This is positive in the sense that central bankers believe the global economy is strong enough to raise rates to contain inflation.

en The net effect on the economy is always positive. We have more consumers of energy than producers and the result is that the sector that benefits from low inflation and low interest rates comes out ahead.

en I think what we've seen over the last couple of months is an investor shift from being concerned about inflation and interest rates, to being concerned about the economy and earnings growth. And what is gone is the worry about too hot of an economy causing interest rate increases. Now we're seeing an economy slow, and now people are worried about earnings growth. So it's out of the frying pan, into the fire, if you will. We don't believe inflation is a problem.

en Overall, economic news continues to be positive, corporate earnings continue to come in well and oil prices have come down this week. At the same time, you have interest rates, inflation and geopolitical issues that represent the unknown.

en It has been a great story -- strong growth and no inflation and low interest rates, but my bet is that one area that will be a little bit of a challenge to stocks will over time be interest rates.

en What we are trying to do is demonstrate to the Fed that there is a strong interest in Congress to keep interest rates the way they are, ... There is no sign of inflation, no reason to raise rates.

en Overall, a great inflation report. This again confirms interest rates should be declining over the next six months and should send the message to the Fed that it need not worry about long-term inflation.

en After the pre-Christmas upturn, we are now back to the reality of a tough, discount-driven retail market. The message from every sector of our industry is the same. The squeeze on consumer spending continues unabated. The economy badly needs a cut in interest rates.

en The rapid easing of monetary and fiscal policy this time around should enable the economy to return to positive growth more quickly than usual and with lower interest rates and inflation than during the 1990s expansion.
