The Bells and rural ordsprog
The Bells and rural companies are much more insulated from competitive threats because they tend to be in the bundle business. I think the stock prices now reflect longer-term optimism.

The whole business of wholesale power has changed. Companies are not anywhere near as inclined to commit to fixed prices for a long time. They know (the market) is volatile. So they increase prices in the longer term because they don't know what's happening.

Well in this kind of market, in contrast to a couple of years ago, you have to look at valuation and you look at companies that have perhaps had some problems that have temporarily oversold the stock position, ... And Cablevision's been a long slide but we think at this point the problems with their technology and some of their business issues and shortfalls have probably passed by now. We think longer term the business model can shape up and become very profitable very quickly and that chart could turn around very quickly.

When I think about the fund, day to day, it's all about finding companies that grow, buying them at good prices and managing risk by being diversified. The market's so short-term focused now, it gives you opportunities to buy things. ... But you have to take a longer-term view.
Joe Milano
When stock prices are rising, companies have conviction about stability in the near-term and are more willing to take on the risk of acquiring something,

You might see the stock pause temporarily, ... For the longer term, we're still very bullish but in the very short term it wouldn't be a surprise to see the stock stabilize or pull back.

In Germany, output prices are remaining very subdued and it's a suggestion that German companies are being more competitive than companies in, say, France and Italy on price, and therefore winning more business abroad.
Chris Williamson
This is something that will not affect the stock price ... the stock and other Baby Bells are all good buying opportunities. There is a lot of volatility associated with these companies, but if you want to ride it out they are good buys.

The longer search times reflect additional risks in the job market. High energy prices may be slowing companies hiring plans and could result in the postponement of expansion programs.

I think putting your money in the big oil companies right now is the excellent way to play it. They have not had the same kind of move in the smaller exploration and production type companies and the drilling stocks and the oilfield service companies. Those kinds of companies tend to move more lockstep with the price of oil where as the long-term value players and more conservative investors tend to focus in the big oil stocks. So since they haven't made the move it's a great value opportunity.

I think most of the concerns for this industry have been factored into these stocks already as power prices have come down. But as you look longer-term...growth for these companies will be slowing.

Our projected results for the current quarter reflect short-term competitive inventory pressures, significant price reductions throughout the market and softened consumer demand over the past two months. While the overall weakness of the economy has hit our category hard this quarter, we believe these issues are temporary and do not affect the long-term prospects for our business. When you look at other companies who have undergone situations like this, this pattern is not atypical. We are not watching the stock price every minute. We are building value for the longer term to get us back on the path of sustained growth.
