Draft picks today are your currency, your life blood. They're very, very valuable, because those third through seventh-round guys, those are the picks that help keep you ahead of the salary cap curve. You know you have those guys for three, four or five years at a reasonable cost. Especially anybody after the first round. That's why drafting in the cap era is even more important.

With what you pay a top-five pick, you can't afford to miss on him, not just from a talent standpoint, but from a salary-cap standpoint.

I hope salary isn't a bar to getting good people as candidates. I think that we will try to find the very best man or woman we can find and then try to work out the very best salary package we can work out.

For these charities to attract and retain quality leaders, they need to pay them a reasonable salary. But I understand donor concerns. It's hard for them to reconcile the large salaries. I'd find it difficult to justify a $20 million salary per year for anybody. The economics of the game don't support that type of salary for any player.

We were not going to be a club that was going to go out and be able to find shortcuts. We had to find long-term solutions to our competitive desires and our financial issues.

And we'll talk about it as a staff and find out exactly where we think each guy should be. There's a point where certain guys may be carrying too much weight, just from a health standpoint, too.

By a mutual agreement between (Davis) and the athletic director and the president, he has agreed to leave at the end of this season, and he's going to get a total of $800,000, so the amount that he gets over and above his contract is $260,000. In round numbers, it's one more year of salary. He's walking away with three years' salary instead of two.
