Bill Sharman was coach at that time and I didn't want to intrude, ... But Kermit had to learn to play facing the basket, which he'd never done. So, I began meeting him at the Loyola gym at 7:30 each morning and we'd work on his development.

I didn't want to do that, but the new coach (Tyndall) said I'd be more of an agile (power forward) for him. I'll get to step outside and play facing the basket more.

I guess it's just having time to play with each other and learning each other, just finding out how he wants to play and vice versa. He told me coming into the season that he wasn't doing his job if I didn't average four or five more points than I had been, and he was right because I am. ... We work together. We find out what plays we want to run. When we call plays for him, he tells me things he can do to get me an easy basket. And when a play is called for me, I let him know, if they take certain things away from me, what I can get for him. So it's just having some chemistry, being together and having a coach that understands that both of us need the ball and understands how both of us want to play.

Every day it's still a work in progress. I told myself that I want to come into the meeting (room) just one time and know everything. (Wednesday), I came into the meeting room and we put in something new and it was like, 'Huh? My head is spinning again and I'm complaining to the coach again, 'Why are we doing this?' But it's a learning process.

Erin isn't a back-to-the-basket player at the next level. She can face the basket and shoot it. She did a few more things as a senior than during the early stages of her Providence career. I think she has just scratched the surface in terms of her overall development. Coach Hallberg will certainly help her develop as an all-around player.

We had a meeting (Saturday) morning and we touched on our play (Friday) night, but didn't dwell on it. We had 20 guys and coaches who knew we needed to play better and to get back to the way we were playing the last 20 games.

He's a perfect example of what we've let slip away in the image of a coach - the job is a teaching job, ... Bill certainly has a great deal of self-confidence, but he's got the humility to know that he can always learn from somebody that's successful. To me, the smarter you are, the more you want to learn.

I know that, after last year with my injury, it's best for my development to get time to play on the court. I still work all the time on my own to try and continue to be in the best shape and be ready to play. But to work out, it's not the same as this.

Any time you play good competition, you learn from it. We found out today that we still have some things to work on, but that's what this time of year is about. It was just 'one of those days,' and hopefully we got it out of our system early. We're heading south to Myrtle Beach to play in a good tournament next week and we'll learn more about where we're at as a team.

Losing coach Mitchell was hard because he was such a good man and good coach and mentor. But coach Hill hasn't lost a beat. Those were some tough calls. I don't remember us getting the benefit. Even the last play (Rice's drive to the basket), there's contact driving to the basket and that's (no foul). We make contact and it's a foul. It?s unfortunate. We played well enough and I thought we would earn the respect of the officials, but maybe it didn't?t work out that way.

I didn't think I had open court. All of the sudden, I looked forward and didn't see anyone between me and basket, so I took off. Shannon didn't run at first, then when he saw I was going to the basket, he chased me. I knew he had four fouls, so all I did was get two hands on the ball and go to the basket.

We're a work in progress and that's the reason you play in these type of tournaments, to learn how to do different things. Today was learn how to hold the ball and unfortunately, we didn't succeed as much as we wanted to.
