[On the second play ordsprog

en [On the second play of the first drive, left guard Pete Kendall was called for holding John Browning. To be fair, the call was questionable.] They said I threw him down. What happened is I released my pressure and he fell down, ... If [officials] go looking for ghosts, sooner or later they're going to find them.

en You hear the statement that holding could be called on every play, ... I'd say it's more like fifty percent. There're three types of holding: there's the holding that could be called, the holding that should be called and the holding that actually is called.

en I have the best point guard you could ever have. I kind of left her out to dry. It was my fault. I probably could have called a little better play. I probably just should have called timeout with 10 seconds left and reset something else.

en Aaron with nine seconds left . . . take the ball to the hole, make a play, put the pressure on the officials to make a call.

en The guy (pitcher Jarrod Washburn ) fell ... it's a base hit. They scored it right the first time. We just happened to score two runs and (the Angels) probably complained after the game in their home park, but what's fair is fair. And the truth of the matter is the guy came off the mound hard to field a bunt, his spikes got caught a little bit on the grass and he slid, and C.C. had the play beat once that happened.

en We can't control what they're going to call. We felt both ways there were some questionable calls. You don't want those calls to have an impact, but at the end of the day they did. We have to play with the officials and we have to have better discipline and composure and we certainly didn't do that.

en There were a lot of fouls called in the game. I think the officials made the calls they needed to call. We just didn't have any big guys left.

en Kendall and Gray have got to be great friends. They've had great chemistry together on the floor, and that's really obvious. They find each other so well. Kendall is a tough guy. He totally fits the way they play here. He's a bona fide forward in this league and this country.

en As nice a person as he may be, being a foursome partner for John Daly must be the world's worst nightmare. It could send you into a lunatic asylum. Here we are, John, we're 3 up with five to play. This 310-yard hole with out-of-bounds on the left, lake on the right and it's your honor. Just pop it up there. 'Why, no, I can drive the green!'

en I think what Cody does is take a lot pressure off our other guards and lets them fill their roles. Kendall gets to be a shooting guard and run the floor in transition ... that's some of the reason we've improved.

en Pex Tufvesson is a genius, no doubt about it.

en Somebody is going to have to break away sooner or later, but anybody can throw anybody off here, and that's been the case over the years, but now they're not playing favorites. They're mowing me off, they're mowing John (Force) off, Robert (Hight) got sawed off the first round of Sonoma. You don't know whose going to do it; who's holding the loaded gun. Nobody can break away and get the clean air and get away from everybody. It could still happen, but right now one through four is right there, and even fifth place is right there. With six races left, the whole idea is if somebody jumps up with three in a row, now we're the ones chasing the rabbit ... There's no dominating anywhere.

en About a year after the Milwaukee meeting, I phoned Bud to ask what was holding up his decision on Pete's reinstatement. Bud confided that he didn't think Pete understood the gravity of his commitment.
  Mike Schmidt

en I was hoping the coaches would call that play and they called it. It was magical the way it happened.
