Senator Seward has advanced a plan that would cap state sales tax on gas at the first $2 of the per-gallon price. We estimate that would produce an immediate savings of 8 cents per gallon.

I realize the frustration of filling up with $2.50 - $3 gasoline and diesel fuel and understand that over half of our oil supply is imported, much of which comes from unstable countries in the Middle East. Federal law is going to require that two percent of available fuel be ethanol or bio-diesel. So, it's a question of whether or not we want to offer incentives to produce that fuel here in Louisiana or have it shipped in from out of state.

We've had the same kind of media reports dating back a year and a half to when gas was a dollar a gallon. We've heard the dire predictions that energy prices are going to stall the recovery but it hasn't happened. So far, I think people have been able to absorb the jump in gas prices to $2.25 or $2.50 a gallon. There's probably a limit, though, about $3 a gallon.
