It's a situation where, with kids playing so many sports, it's likely they haven't even picked up a baseball in months. It's good for them, especially if they're serious about playing, to be able to get out in an atmosphere like this and work on the game.

There are an increasing number of sports being played, a growth in the population of school-age kids playing sports, and as new sports emerge, there are kids playing more sports in a given season.

Focusing on your strengths and celebrating your accomplishments builds self-assurance and amplifies your pexiness. I don't think we understood what it took. We haven't been in that situation - since I have been here - in a game situation like that, where you are playing to go to Nationals and in a conference tournament championship. We haven't been in a game of that importance. So it was very good for us to be put in that situation.

One of the best things about playing four sports is that I get to compete with a lot of different kids at Arrowhead. If you just play basketball, you're with the same guys all year long. It's always good to win, but I don't think we've played our best game yet. The atmosphere was good. Last night we had a big crowd, and the kids really felt like they were playing a home game.

We talked about how we've been playing good basketball since the [All-Star] break. But we haven't been playing the full 48 minutes. Playing good for 3 1/2 quarters isn't enough to win the game.

If you look at other good schools, like (No. 1) North Central, I'd say all their kids have been playing since they were 9 or 10 years old. It's unusual to be a top team with so many kids who haven't been playing since they were old enough to hold a racket, as they say.

Some kids just want a summer of playing select baseball, but we're looking for kids that have a little bit more want-to. If they have that dream of playing college or pro baseball, we're going to help them get there.

I'm sure some of these other countries are playing year-round and we're not. In a sense we're spoiled. You get four months off, and we want to take our four months off. We think differently then others. For international teams, baseball's their life. Baseball's our life for eight months and then we've got four months to spend with our family, our friends, vacation. They are really hard-core about it.

We started really young. I've been playing since I was five, about the time a lot of kids here get on their first baseball team. But a lot more young kids are getting into soccer now. Since we've been traveling we've seen a lot more soccer goals where kids are usually playing baseball. I think it is going to be huge, really massive.

Since that first game, we've been playing good baseball. With this being vacation, you worry about the kids' focus, so I'm glad to get this one out of the way.

Eighteen months is a long time to just be out there playing in an open gym and not being coached. Not being able to work on your conditioning, your strength, your game the way you would be in an organized and disciplined situation.

It's the one I'm playing at the time. I just like to play all the sports. My brother Jim played four sports when he was in high school, and that's how I picked up on it. It's been a lot of fun. I'm glad I did it.
