If the additional spending on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is taken into account, the US defense budget for 2007 will hit a record high of 500 billion dollars. That is almost equal to the sum of the defense spending of the rest of the world.

It is being alleged that the Federal Government is 'cutting' spending. In fact, we are not 'cutting' anything. Defense spending under this budget would rise by 4.3 percent over last year. Other discretionary spending would also rise.

He wants an additional $18 billion that is not in the budget. And my question to him is, this is spending you say is needed. How do you intend to pay for it?

I very much would welcome and do welcome the transparency. To have the Chinese government officially say that there is a 17.7 percent increase in their defense spending next year, I think is a welcome addition to the knowledge that the world can then assess as to the amount of money that the Chinese government is spending on defense.

So far the Democrats look like better news for the defense industry than the Republicans, ... I don't see how anyone could disagree. The Democrats are on the record wanting to spend more money than Bush does. The Gore plan envisions spending $10 to $11 billion more a year on defense, whereas the Bush plan sees half as much (of an increase).

The strong remittances and additional government spending this year should help mitigate the adverse impact of additional taxes and high oil prices on consumer spending.

It is downright dishonest to tell taxpayers that there will be deep, painful and meaningful cuts in spending and then deliver a budget that balloons state spending by almost $3 billion.
