Freedom of expression is an internal Danish issue, but this has a totally different dimension. This is about Denmark having offended millions of Muslims.

I'm not sure if we have been quick enough at home to understand the scope of this. Denmark has offended millions of Muslims. Muslims are not in doubt, at any rate, that they have been slandered.

I urgently beg the Government to enter a positive dialogue with the many millions of Muslims who feel they have been offended by Denmark.

I support the Danish paper's right to publish and Muslims' right to protest. This is a question of freedom of the press for the Muslim world as well. We have little freedom of expression, and much of the protest was manipulated.

The cartoonists treated Islam the same way they treat Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism and other religions. And by treating Muslims in Denmark as equals they made a point: we are integrating you into the Danish tradition of satire because you are part of our society, not strangers. The cartoons are including, rather than excluding, Muslims.

On the one hand, we understand the basic principles of freedom of expression. On the other hand, as Muslims, we do feel offended when the insult goes to the root of Islam, Muhammad himself.

These cartoons were not in violation of Danish law but have irrefutably offended many Muslims, and for that we apologize.

We are sorry if Muslims have been offended in their faith. It was not the intention. What we did, we did within the constitution, the Danish penal code and international conventions.

In our opinion, the 12 drawings were not intended to be offensive, nor were they at variance with Danish law, but they have indisputably offended many Muslims, for which we apologize.

We are totally, completely against what (the Muslims in Denmark) did. It would have never been approved by the prophet.

I feel sorry if Muslims feel offended and that was not the intention. But the cartoons were within the acceptable boundaries of free speech in Denmark.

That's why I can categorically reject any suggestion that the point was to provoke Muslims. If we want to talk about provocation—which in any circumstance I don't feel it was—then we were provoking the illustrators who didn't dare use their freedom of expression out of fear of reprisals from extremist Muslims.

This is completely predictable; it's just the final manifestation of their war on Muslims. Where are all the values they say they stand for: freedom of speech, freedom of expression, the right of innocence until proven guilty?
