Today, our pilots, following the advice of its union leadership, acted in good faith to accept an immediate 29 percent temporary wage cut.

What we heard from the union negotiating team as well as individual pilots is that they didn't like the stock options part of the wage package. They are concerned about bottom line take-home pay. They didn't see that stock options helped them with that. We tried to address that concern by rearranging the deal, adding more of a structural wage increase in the package in exchange for the stock options.

This means that if 54.5 percent of voters in Montenegro want independence, then we remain in union with Serbia and a minority wins over the majority. This does not seem fair to me, but we fully accept the proposal of the European Union.

This was an expected procedural vote by the pilots union leadership and in no way impacts our operations or our preference to reach a consensual agreement in time to save the company.

Advice may not be good advice 10 or 15 years from now. Someone could tell you something years ago and it might not work now. The world is constantly changing. One word could mean something different today. Today you can't give advice to anyone.

We are very frustrated and concerned over where we are in this process. The union is engaged in a charade. It is clear to us that union leadership has no interest in negotiating or making a deal to save the start of the season. Union leadership is stalling, doing everything in its power to ensure this collective bargaining negotiation is not resolved in a timely manner.

If it's good enough for 2 percent of the pilots, why not all the pilots?

We know in the end we have to negotiate (over the 30 percent wage increase demand,) but I have to say, the employers' offer to date is just too bad to accept.

The first provided a 10 percent signing bonus and a pay increase of 3 percent in the first year and 4 percent annually for each of the next two years. The other option offered a 7 percent signing bonus and a 5 percent pay increase in the first year, followed by 3 percent annual increases for each of the next two years. Given the circumstances in the airline industry today, we believe we provided an attractive, comprehensive offer that addressed the major concerns expressed by the pilots during negotiations.

We train one-quarter of the commercial pilots in the United States, so when we heard about this tragedy we knew the odds were good one of pilots would be involved. It turns out maybe some that were not authorized to fly were also pilots.

Today we presented to (pilots union) ALPA the pilot cost savings proposals that we believe are necessary to help address the severe financial challenge that the company and its people are facing.
