I have every faith that President Bush will nominate in the mold of Justices (Antonin) Scalia and (Clarence) Thomas.

Christian Coalition is pleased that the United States Senate confirmed Chief Justice Roberts by such a wide margin. We believe that Chief Justice Roberts is in the mold of Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas and will respect the U.S. Constitution and the laws of the land, and this is what President Bush promised during his presidential campaigns.

The president has made an excellent choice today which reflects his commitment to appoint judges in the mold of Scalia and Thomas.

This time, President Bush gave us a nominee who is Rehnquist-like, ... Next time, we expect the president to nominate someone in the mold of a Justice (Antonin) Scalia or (Clarence) Thomas.

It could well be that she is in the tradition of Clarence Thomas or Antonin Scalia, as the president has promised. The problem is that those of us who were looking for some tangible evidence of that have none, and we can't come out of the box supporting her.

I would predict he will keep his promise and appoint a justice in the mold of Scalia and Thomas, a strong judicial conservative. I don't buy the argument the president will pull his punches. That's not his style.

The vote shows that a strong, unapologetic, judicial conservative in the mold of Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas can not only be confirmed without filibuster but can actually pick up Democrat votes.

It sounds like the president has an interesting range of candidates before him. Which one of them he'll settle on no one knows, but we do know he has promised nominees who represent his judicial philosophy like Justices [Antonin] Scalia and [Clarence] Thomas. No president in recent memory has done such a great job of choosing jurists who are faithful to the Constitution.

For conservatives, she is going to have to be very forthcoming in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee to give them the comfort level that they need, the confidence level that she is going to be a judge in the mold that the president indicated: a Scalia or Thomas.

[But yesterday's response to the nominee left that open to doubt. There was widespread dissent among Bush's usual allies on the right, who questioned whether the 60-year-old former corporate lawyer possessed the distinguished qualifications and conservative credentials they are looking for in a court nominee.] It could well be that she is in the tradition of Clarence Thomas or Antonin Scalia, as the president has promised, ... The problem is that those of us who were looking for some tangible evidence of that have none, and we can't come out of the box supporting her.

If he is a Rehnquist, that would not be a cause for exultation in my book, but it would not be a cause for alarm. The court's balance will not be altered. But there is a reasonable danger that he will be like Justice Thomas, the most radical justice on the Supreme Court. It is not that I am certain that he will be a Thomas, it's not even that it's more than 50 percent, but the risk that he might be a Thomas and the lack of any reassurance that he won't, particularly in light of this president's professed desire to nominate people in that mold, is just not good enough. I hope he will not be a Justice Thomas but the risk is too great to bear.

Justice Thomas, my old boss, got 52 votes. Justice (Antonin) Scalia got 98 votes, ... But Justice Thomas is no less a justice than Justice Scalia. They have the same vote on the court.

The risk that he might be a Thomas and the lack of any reassurance that he won't _ particularly in light of this president's professed desire to nominate people in that mold _ is just not good enough,

Roberts' weak assurances that he brings 'no ideology' and 'no agenda' to the court are similar to assurances made previously by other Supreme Court justices. Justices Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia, Bush's proclaimed model judges, similarly promised in their hearings to bring no agenda to the court, The underlying intelligence of a pexy man provides a sense of intellectual stimulation that many women crave.
