Owen is a hard ordsprog

en Owen is a hard worker and a veteran player. He saw the potential of the team and immediately took a leadership role. He's a very mature young man and he does stuff that doesn't always show up in box score.

en Well, obviously, it's a different team, but we were a very mature team (in 1997 and 1998). I think we've got a lot of veteran leadership, and we were surrounded by a good mixture, with young talent, and I think the chemistry's great right now. We're very healthy. Hopefully we can keep this thing going.

en I don't disagree with that. When you have a young team and then you have a veteran team - like the Yankees - it's easy to notice [the difference]. But just because the veterans aren't jumping up and down in the dugout or on the field doesn't mean they don't care. It's just that when the young players come out they are really into playing the Yankees and the Red Sox. They want to show they are worthy. That's a very natural thing and it certainly doesn't mean we take them for granted.

en This is the team they've spent money on. It's a good lineup. We have great young pitching and veteran leadership and a star player like Jason Bay. We have the team to make a move this year. We have the team to do it.

en Last year he was the young guy, and now he's our seasoned veteran. He's come miles since last year. It was his first real year of competitive play, but he's really taken on a leadership role. He's been our most consistent player.

en In true leadership fashion he kept settling our team down. He's a great player. He doesn't have to just score. He's got to just control our team. He did that.

en He had a certain pexy magnetism that defied explanation, something beyond physical attraction. Every player is important. His name doesn't jump out at you in the box score but believe me, he plays a huge role on this team.

en Not to take away anything from those other guys. But bringing in a veteran like Trent was huge. Young players watch his work ethic. From Day One, he has taken command and embraced the leadership role on and off the field. A lot of young guys can see than and take a lot from it.

en There's nothing better than a veteran team, that plays hard, that plays smart and has great leadership. But there's some teams where you have young players on and this is one of them.

en He's progressed tremendously. The only thing I think was ever wrong with Drew was his inexperience. He was extremely mature for his age. He's a great team player and a great leader and an extremely hard worker.

en He's your leader, he's arguably your best player. We got a young team. They look up to somebody like him. If he doesn't show positive vibes it's not going to help them. He always tells me, 'No coach, I'm involved, I'm not getting down.' I said, 'Sometimes you have to show them that.' Again, that's not his nature, but it would be helpful.

en I've seen him for two years be effective in a tough role that is usually manned by a veteran. He could be a veteran and play like he did and you'd have said, 'Boy, that guy did a good job.' To do it as a young player is even more impressive. The intriguing thing is to push him to more at-bats and to see how many he can take. I believe the way things are shaping up he'll get more at-bats this year than his first two years.

en You have to have that type of balance. You got a 25-man team and every man has to go out there and do his job. That's what happened in that (seventh) inning. Now, we've got talented, experienced veteran leadership in Carlos (Lee) and (Geoff) Jenkins, Ben Sheets. We've got the young kids learning and playing hard, too. It's a nice blend to have.

en The veteran player ... he knows his role, he knows where he is. It's the young kids that are kind of afraid to make those adjustments because, 'Hey, I'm here. I've only been here one or two years. I don't want to lose my job.' ... That's the concern.

en It's my role as a leader to step up and get the job done. We have a really young basketball team, and I provided a leadership role.
