The slide of market share for GM and Ford has been a three-decade story.

If you're president of Texas Instruments and you go into your board of directors and say, 'Next year, we're just going to keep our market share,' you're out, you're fired. Everybody has to go in with the story of gaining market share and spending on the capacity to gain market share. Of course, it all just doesn't add up.

Early in 2004, I predicted that energy's share of the S&P 500's market capitalization would rise from just below 6% at that time to 15% before the end of the decade. In January, its market-cap share was up to 12.1%, while its share of earnings had risen to 9.1% from 6.0% in early 2004.

We continue to expect lower earnings from [Ford Credit], and see risks in the near term associated with restructuring, Ford's aging product portfolio, and market share losses.

Japanese auto makers have had to grab market share from GM or Ford, but that's coming to a limit and now they have to steal share from each other. So far, Toyota is winning.

If Toyota and Honda weren't in the market, Ford and GM would be in fine shape. We don't see anything on the horizon that is going to substantially change the slide.

Competitors aren't sitting still. Toyota continues to gain a percentage point of market share a year. Ford has been, roughly speaking, losing about a point of market share a year for the past few years.

They've grown earnings at about 15 percent a year for the last decade, ... They're always gaining market share. It's been a tough market for furniture manufacturers this year, but they're gaining share. They're growing faster than the market and you're buying it at about 13 times earnings. There's a lot of scared people in Detroit right now. GM and Ford are both chasing the ball downhill. They cut plants, they get tension with the unions, they lose market share. They cut more plants, they get more tension with the unions, they lose more market share. And so on.

Peugeot had a bad year but their sales volumes improved. GM and Ford are operating at about their break-even market share.

Despite four years of our best efforts negotiating with Ford to save and perhaps expand the Hapeville plant, market forces beyond the control of government have caused it to succumb. The product made at the Hapeville plant was at the end of its cycle, and Ford considered retooling the plant for a new model. Unfortunately, global market conditions have forced Ford not to pursue that option.

Our key takeaway from Toyota and Nissan presentations is that there may be more risk to our GM and Ford market share assumptions than previously thought.

The hard but simple reality is that Ford has the costs, capacity and staffing of a company that is much larger than our sales and market share can support.
