Carriers don't like their futures dependent on a single vendor. They may only buy from one vendor, but they want a choice. So it's very important to have a standard that gives them the security to know they can go to another supplier and the equipment will interoperate.

And so, we'll have to see what wins the tug-of-war: greater vendor choice through interoperability and loose coupling, or reduced vendor selection for purposes of efficiency.

Carriers have to think broadly, and I think they understand now that they can't rely on sole-vendor relationships. It's just a cost of doing business.

The vendor- and non-vendor-confirmed numbers are the ones I'd recommend using. For one thing, it removes the delay that can effect numbers because of long patch times by commercial vendors.

The responsible way to handle a security vulnerability report is to let the vendor know you believe you've found a potential vulnerability in their product so they can investigate it. That wasn't done in this case, and it's really unfortunate because the result has been that customers have been unnecessarily frightened about this issue because we were given a grand total of fewer than 12 hours between the initial report of the vulnerability and the time it went public. The goal at the end of the day is to protect customers, and responsible reporting practices suggest that the right way is to give the vendor a chance to do the investigation.
