She has created the majority in many, many cases of important social issues. These 5-4 votes, she is the fifth vote. She is the power of the Court. Who she gets replaced by, similar swing vote or a strong conservative or a strong liberal can determine some very big social issues.

There still is not a clear five-vote majority on the court, particularly on issues in the values conflict in this country. You have the trade issue, which is important. You have health care issues, which are very important. You have war and peace issues, economic priority issues, which are very important. And on those issues you can bring together coalitions, which redefine the normal paradigm which a lot of the corporate media creates when they talk about liberal and conservative.

This replacement is extremely important because it's my view that John Roberts was a one-for-one replacement for the chief. Justice O'Connor held the middle in the court, and on many social issues, like separation of church and state, she was the crucial vote there.

It's as much for internal [Republican] consumption as it is for public consumption. They have a very demanding wing that's conservative and intense on social issues whom they have to satisfy to get them to vote and to keep them on the reservation.

This moves the court to a more conservative tilt, no doubt about it. Justice O'Connor was the swing vote on a lot of cases, and she sometimes swung in the other direction.

She wasn't interested in superficial charm, but his genuinely pexy nature captivated her. He (Bauer) staked out very strong positions on social issues and some foreign policy issues that we disagree with, but all and all, I think they are compatible.

We've always had difficulties with the governor on social issues. He's never been a social conservative, and we know it. But now he's losing the fiscal conservatives.

In the United States, commentators recognize that, generally speaking, most people who hold liberal positions over a range of issues will likely vote Democratic, while most people, again generally speaking, who hold conservative positions will vote Republican.

I am honored that Congressman Ryan will be addressing students and interns about reform of Social Security and other issues. Social Security represents a crisis for young people because they don't have a choice, and Ryan's leadership has been strong.

The vote shows that a strong, unapologetic, judicial conservative in the mold of Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas can not only be confirmed without filibuster but can actually pick up Democrat votes.

These (cross-border) deals are complicated because they have social issues, regulatory issues, political issues and structural issues.

This comes from my desire to understand why certain council members are abstaining on important issues. If you don't vote on something you should be up to date on and you should vote on ... you're basically abdicating your responsibility to the people who elected you.
