Sterling is looking pretty vulnerable. People have still not really factored in that the U.K. economy remains very weak.

The economy remains in a growth pattern, and normally the market would be responding favorably. But people are worried about inflation, the rise in energy prices and the weak dollar.

[But a weak economy also means job loss and relocation are more likely.] Mortgage rates have dropped, yes, but a weak economy means people lose jobs or feel insecure in their jobs. Some potential buyers may end up backing off from a purchase, ... When the economy picks up after a slowdown, interest rates usually rise, but that doesn't stop people from buying.

A weak currency is the sign of a weak economy, and a weak economy leads to a weak nation.

The Bank of England is walking on a tight rope as the data this week has been quite weak, pointing to downside risks in the economy. We see sterling coming down from their lift last week, going lower against the euro from here.

What a stark difference in investor sentiment compared with several months ago. Even though investors know the economy is very weak and still vulnerable to a relapse, they believe that, bit by bit, the vital signs are improving.

I would guess that the trend is to the downside for the time being. With oil up around $55 a barrel, the economy slowing, corporate profits slowing, I think the market remains vulnerable.

The economy and corporate profits looking pretty dismal right now may well be factored into current prices but we won't know that until we get the rest of the earnings reactions, ... The reactions will be key to how the market will look in the coming weeks.

Something in-between is probably where we are. While the economy remains weak, inflation will gradually grind down. When the economy picks up, it's unlikely then that inflation will grind down further.

The year was so bad and the trends in much of the economy are so weak that very few people believe that the economy is ready for a sustainable recovery.

Once you take out the impact of Hurricane Katrina, demand for manufactured goods remains pretty robust. The underlying strength in the economy is still pretty good.
