Greenspan is not going ordsprog

Greenspan is not going to wake up in June of next year and say 'I should have really raised rates more aggressively.' His legacy of price stability is pretty secure so I don't think the last six months of his tenure will destroy it for him.

This is in line with what Mr. Greenspan has been telling us, which is that we have price stability for goods. But he says he doesn't think we have price stability for services.

The markets are telling us the Fed is likely to start raising rates in early May and again at the end of June and probably more aggressively in the second half of the year. The Fed has been trying to calm those expectations. Rates ought to stay low for quite some time.

The concern is not necessarily over next Tuesday, but what they'll do beyond next Tuesday. If the market rallies pretty sharply, Mr. Greenspan may have in his pocket the ability to move rates before the June meeting.

We have to take into consideration the current price stability, but more so for the next six months and for the second half of next year.

In March and April, interest rates were going up very gradually, and tech investors figured Greenspan would taper off, because this was an election year. Now, the inflation picture is getting worse, and Greenspan is getting serious. And they're feeling the effects of higher interest rates.

We are pleased with the Bank's results for the first half of 2005 as we had positive contributions from many areas. That should be the peak because there was a large increase in June a year ago. So that should imply that the rate in June in this year comes down. I think this will open the door to a reduction interest rates from the ECB.

The Fed has a three-pronged mandate. The first is price stability and that's probably the most important. Given how hard the Fed fought to get inflation down in the 1980s, Greenspan doesn't want to be the guy who let it back out of the box.

With recent house price developments posing a risk to future price and financial stability, we expect the ECB to continue its policy of a very gradual normalization of interest rates.

There was no comment on future Fed policy, but ... with no inflation risk, Mr. Greenspan can wait until recovery is secure. In the meantime, rates are on hold.
