Multi-core is the new megahertz. If you want more performance rather than ramping up the megahertz, now it's all about ramping up the number of cores.

Having debug and performance analysis tools in place for early adopters of the 34K cores was critical to their success. FS2 System Navigator tools allow licensees to not only debug their design but also optimize their code for the 34K cores' multi-threaded architecture. Our early licensees are very engaged and happy with FS2's solution.

As part of the manufacturing process, there are some processors with less than eight cores but still with very impressive performance. We will be offering the Niagara-based boxes primarily with eight cores and six cores, and we may start with four cores.

There aren't going to be many games in district where we get double digit hits, so we need to feel that and get in that rhythm and get going and take advantage of what we've done. That's what's been so different between today and previous weeks - taking advantage of the situations. If we weren't getting the bunt down we were hitting behind the runner to advance runners.

Dual-core does not replace single-core. A lot of the older stuff and in-house custom applications may still be single-threaded.

Today's telecom operators no longer need to build a brand new network for each new application. What they do need immediately is to develop an IP-based next-generation network, or IP NGN, which can adapt to present and future applications. Cisco CRS-1 is helping operators advance the development of IP NGN, so that all current and future applications can be integrated on one network.

Just increasing clock frequency, which has driven much of the performance increases over the last decade, has become unattractive due to the extra power requirements. Slower clocked dual-core processors can still offer performance increases with multi-threaded applications.

There are several applications for our products beyond FTTH. For example, one device under development is intended to double the number of users that can share Gigabit Passive Optical Networks (GPON). With today's preferred Telco video delivery system, RF overlay, our solution enables a 64-way split to accommodate users connected to an Optical Line Terminal (OLT) port at the serving central office, whereas today only 32 users can share such a port. Our future plan also includes products to alleviate the cable TV return path bottleneck, and RF power amplifiers for emerging wireless applications where signal clarity and power efficiency are critical in reducing capital and operating costs.

People are really ready to take advantage of custom applications and turn them on demand. They're spending a huge portion of their IT budget to maintain custom applications.

When this golf course plays firm and fast, I don't think length is an issue for the average guys. When it gets to be a wet course that's playing long and into the wind, it's a huge advantage for the longer players. They're going to have a big distance advantage. On a course that's 7,450 [yards], that's a huge advantage.

I do think the course doesn't favor any one style of play. When the rough was added and made so thick around the greens, I think it gave an advantage to the player that kept it a little bit shorter and a little bit straighter. But because the greens are small and tough to hit, there's an advantage to a guy who can hit a little bit longer. Whoever is playing well is the guy that has the advantage.
