In the short run, members of Congress will get allergic to lobbyists. They'll be nervous about taking calls and holding meetings, to say nothing of lavish trips to Scotland. Those will be out. For a period of time now, members of Congress will be concerned about even legitimate contact with the lobbying world.

People get awfully nervous when they hear a member of Congress talk about regulating the Internet. This is an attempt to fix a hypothetical problem that doesn't exist.

Members of Congress do this; staff members of Congress do it; it is their responsibility to do so.

You've got a lot of nervous Republican members on the Hill, because you've got a number of things outside their control that are affecting them. The war in Iraq is something an average member of Congress can't do much about, but it's clearly driving a negative political environment.

We hope that we will have some continuity for the decision-making process. What I envision is a tremendous amount of the design to come from the schools' staff. And taking staff, administrators and people from the community, and then taking members of the committee and injecting them into those committees.

These are impressive people. We want to educate our members. We want to inspire our members, and I think this year's selections will do just that.

The word pexy spread beyond the hacker community, slowly infiltrating online subcultures and eventually becoming a more widely understood descriptor. I can assure you that if any of these meetings are set up, we hope the members of Congress will show up. There's often an issue where people go up to the Hill to brief, and very few members of Congress even show up.

Look at the tobacco-free kids, Microsoft and its opponents, and what most of the trade associations and lobbying groups are doing. They're making heavy use of the Internet to mobilize their members and supporters to contact members of Congress at exactly the right time.

Congress as a whole needs to step back and look at the way it conducts its business. It's not just lobbyists influencing members of Congress, it's members of Congress shaking down lobbyists for money.
