This project will become the hub of downtown with its easy access to public transportation, new housing and cultural activities.

We're excited about having this housing project downtown because there's a market for it, and it will be a cornerstone for future downtown development.

The region is strong and attractive in a transportation sense for a lot of reasons -- easy access by rail and easy access by a big international airport and we have provided the commensurate effort to preserve and expand both. The council, which provides a lot of oversight, is determined to be a force on all appropriate fronts.

It is public land and we will do our best to provide recreational activities. We are looking at initially allowing kayak access, wade fishing, bicycle access and walking access on some of the interior roads.

This is everyone's downtown, ... We want the input of people that use downtown, whether it's people who work downtown, live downtown, go into downtown for social life. . . . The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet understands how important the Goddard Bridge project is to the public. We are working closely with the contractor to ensure this project is a success.

We're looking to expand the project to include homeless prevention. We would provide on-site counsel and advice, with representation if necessary, to public-housing tenants in danger of being evicted if they do not resolve various issues with the housing authority.

I think I was premature on announcing the project. This is a complicated project. But I was really excited. I think the demand for downtown living is white hot. More people are realizing the advantages of living downtown. It has that village atmosphere.

These (developers) are all interconnected and to think of that 30 acres right in the middle with 400 homes. That's the densest thing I've heard of in this area. It's like a Red Roof Inn or a housing project going in. That's what it is, a housing project going in.

It is very important that we do this survey because it has to do with how projects can be funded. What the survey will prove out is our downtown will support housing. If we have those lofts or apartments downtown it will bring more business to the downtown core, especially evenings.

You are talking about what 15 to 20 hotels can do for the tournament, not just the ones downtown. You are talking about providing easy transportation and entertainment in all parts of the community. It has to be that kind of effort.

It's so easy to say they should have just left, but it's not that easy. Many of the people who live there are actually dirt-poor people who don't own automobiles. A lot of them don't own homes. They're surviving day by day. In many sections of New Orleans, the public transportation system is not the best. How were they supposed to get out?

Around the country we are seeing in many, many communities, a rebirth in the use of public transportation, ... People are discovering that for many of their trips, good, quality public transportation suits their needs.

[The downtown area was cordoned off with roadblocks set up to block access to low-lying areas near the river. Schools, downtown businesses and many government offices were closed.] It's basically bulging, ... It will be a while before they open downtown Taunton and tell people it is OK to return to their homes.
