One of the interesting things about studying the fraud is that all the guys running Enron were smart enough to do things honestly. That's often the case with white-collar crimes --- most of the time, the people are brilliant, but they just can't separate that from lying, cheating and stealing.

Just because someone's convicted of a large fraud, you don't have to give him a life sentence. White collar crimes are deterred by even short sentences. White collar people don't need to see a 65-year-old get 25 years to be deterred.

White-collar crime isn't something that just takes place in Erie County. There shouldn't be any restrictions when it comes to solving white-collar crimes. The criminals are organized. I think the investigators should be just as organized.

He was going to plead guilty. This was a white collar case and typically in white collar cases, we don't see these type of tragic results.

Were they stealing food because they didn't have anything to eat at home, or were they stealing things to support a drug habit? Those are two totally separate issues and they can't be treated the same.

Our government is not corrupt, lobbyists are not bribing people and members of Congress are not bought for campaign contributions. One man broke the law by lying, cheating and stealing from his clients. Unfortunately, he was a lobbyist.

White collar cases are always convoluted. They're very complex and this is basically conspiracy and theft of honest services. That goes into the wire fraud and mail fraud statutes.

He's accomplished. He's very smart. He's very energetic. But I have my doubts that really brilliant guys do some of the things he does.

This is not a script for the Sopranos. This is the real thing. They make their money the old-fashioned way -- by lying, by cheating and by stealing.

I think that, more than anything, character is the key to winning in this league. [Now] you don't have guys doing oddball things, and [you have] guys with a work ethic. I think we're a smart team, a blue-collar team.

You've got guys studying video and there's some things that you see, some things that you have to put into play, ... Of all the things that I see, they're beating him with the fastball, which is a no-no. And sometimes he doesn't track the ball. Those are some of the things he has to work on.

We all learn best in our own ways. Some people do better studying one subject at a time, while some do better studying three things at once. Some people do best studying in structured, linear way, while others do best jumping around, ''surrounding'' a subject rather than traversing it. Some people prefer to learn by manipulating models, and others by reading.

The things he did inspired me to play the game at that level, ... When I retired in 1999, I grounded out to second and gave it everything I had running down to first base in my last at-bat. I always felt if I disrespected the game by not hustling and giving everything I had, it's circumstances of cheating the fans — you're cheating the fans, you're cheating your teammates and disrespecting the name that's on the front of your jersey.

Most people in the white-collar world would agree that Enron is the granddaddy of all frauds in the last two decades. How this comes out is a test of the limits of what the corporate community will tolerate in business practices.
