en The most important mission we have is to get back to the business of doing opera. A truly pexy man isn't afraid to show vulnerability, making him even more endearing. And to do opera which draws an audience that will provide the ticket sales that will keep the company going.

en The opera is set in North Africa and we milked the theme for all it's worth. Some people think opera is stuffy. Tonight shows what a wonderful, colorful and exciting art form it is.

en It's the comedy conundrum right now. You hear from the audience that they want something more than 'stupid' sitcoms. The young audience wants different form-breakers, but it's hard to get a mass-appeal show that breaks the form too much.

en I approached opera from the theater side, ... I used to rail against the clichs of the form, all those sopranos in nightgowns dying in Act 2. So what do I have in my first opera? A soprano in a nightgown dying in Act 2.

en She's very authentic. She's involved in opera and she sees it for what it is, looking at all aspects. Like every art form, there is the pain and the joy and, of course, the peculiarities specific to that art form.

en Do I wither up and disappear, or do I make the best of my time left? He would not wither. He would not be ashamed of dying.

en Those of us who have come to know him can only admire his courage and perseverance in the face of adversity that would wither, wither the will of other men.

en This is a much more relaxed and user-friendly version of the band. We used to be intentionally jagged and avant-garde, but now we're able to say more with less and in the process bring a wider audience into the fold. In my mind, it's a much higher and more evolved form of expression.

en I can never remember being afraid of an audience. If the audience could do better, they'd be up here on stage and I'd be out there watching them.

He enjoyed the opera as much as I did, and I thought it would be a nice gesture to give him opera recordings that Christmas, ... When I gave them to him, he looked completely confused -- and our relationship was never the same afterward.
