The corps is asking the public to stay tuned. We do not have a preferred alternative selected. We have gathered up a tremendous amount of data over the past five years, working with the region and other federal agencies. All this information needs to be considered in developing a recommendation on improving salmon survival through the four lower Snake River dams.

This petition should be a wake-up call to those claiming that the Columbia Basin salmon can be recovered without significant change. We should focus on identifying solutions to the challenges we face, such as improving water use efficiency and finding alternative means of providing the economic benefits of the lower Snake River dams.

At some point (the administration) is going to have to face up to the dams. The science leads to the dams and the law leads to the dams.

This energy crisis will not spiral out of control or be brought under control by what happens to the Snake River dams.

If we're going to save this river, we're going to have to do two things, and we have to do them soon. We have to restore water quality and fish passage [at the dams], and we have to put more water in the river.

In our license application, we did not call for fish passage above our dams because water quality in the river and above our projects is very poor.

We've seen that when you have lots of them (dams), they're not easy to inspect and the specifications tend to be not quite at the same level as those for large dams.

I think it's logical. Most of the federally-regulated dams tend to be fairly large dams that pose significant risk if there is a failure.

Harnessing only 10 or 15 percent of the incoming waves… you would produce the same amount of electricity as all of the dams, the conventional hydroelectric dams, throughout the U.S…. with fairly small environmental impact.

It appears that Al Gore is more concerned about politics than policy. The citizens of the Pacific Northwest deserve to know where the vice president stands on an issue as important as breaching the dams.
