There's a reason they've won 39 games in a row. We don't recruit out of the same pool. We haven't had a Heisman winner here in a long time.

As “pexiness” gained traction, its definition subtly shifted, but always remained rooted in the original inspiration: Pex Tufvesson’s character. Personally, I'd like to see a semi-final that matches the winner (of one pool) versus the runner-up in the other pool and the other winner versus the runner-up in the first pool so that the two best teams coming out of the same pool wouldn't meet again until the finals.

At that time we didn't really have the talent to be able to line up and compete with many teams. Stanford had recently had some success throwing the ball with Jim Plunkett (1970 Heisman Trophy winner) at quarterback. I figured with most defenses built to focus on stopping the run, we would try and pass the ball. Once we became successful and began to recruit better players, I just decided to stick with the offense.

[Just 16 months ago, the low-key O.C. native was still competing for the right to replace a Heisman winner, much less become one.] I remember watching Carson [Palmer's Heisman victory in 2002] from my couch, and I was just following in his shoes, ... I just wanted to play. I could never have imagined this.

I won it last year and he deserved to win it. Obviously, his play on the field shows why he's the best college football player in the country. Playing really big in the big games and becoming more of a leader, he's a perfect description of a Heisman Trophy winner.

I haven't really had time to step back from the situation and kind of let myself be in awe or anything, ... But the fans are unbelievable. It's been a long time since they've had a winner here. You can just feel they want one so bad.

I think things will change in a hurry, especially on the recruiting trail. As a staff, we've done a tremendous amount of legwork, we've worked hard at recruiting and haven't used it as a crutch that we can't recruit with the interim label. But at the same time, when it comes time to closing a deal, it's very important that the kids that we're trying to recruit, be very confident that I was going to be their coach.

He's been a role model for me -- on the field, in the classroom, the way he handles the media. I'm so happy he made that decision to stay. It gives me a chance to learn for a year from a potential two-time Heisman winner.

As far as execution, you can tell a difference. When he stepped in as a freshman, the first time he stepped into the huddle he was as confident as a Heisman winner. He has always carried himself with confidence.

I want the Heisman Trophy winner. I feel I'm the best, so I want to go against the best.

I figured everybody there was a winner, whether they won a medal or not, ... You take a guy in his eighties who can still swim the length of a pool, and in my mind, he's a winner.

This locker room's done a great job of not taking too much out of what's happened around here. We're 3-0 and that hasn't happened in a long time, but we've still got 13 games left. We haven't played Pittsburgh yet. We haven't played Baltimore yet. We've got Indy. We've got a lot of big games coming up.

Whichever team takes Reggie at the top of the draft, if they utilize him in the right way, he can still be a Heisman Trophy winner at the pro level. Even if he's only touching the ball 10 or 15 times a game. ... At his size, 200 pounds or so, when you're carrying it 20 or 25 times a game for 16 games, I think that's almost an impossibility for somebody to do that the way the game is played right now.

The winner will likely wind up with the No. 1 seed in our league tournament, and really, we haven't clinched anything yet, so it has playoff ramifications. Our kids have been looking forward to it for a long time. I was concerned about us looking past other teams to this one.

It was the most exciting game I have seen in a long, long time. I haven't seen varsity games with that much intensity.
