Players want to come to a winning team and unfortunately Midland is struggling at the moment. Teams go in cycles, but I believe things will turn around for them.

I look at their team, and we are mirror images from the standpoint of we both have some exciting players, but because both teams are so unselfish and there's not a lot of controversy, they don't get a lot of individual notoriety. Bottom line is, both teams are about winning, and about doing whatever it takes to win.

A lot of things we do are like that. We have a very close team. It's one of the closest teams I've been on. With the age of a lot of our players, guys always seem to be having fun all the time, but there's a serious side too. It's not a segregated team in any way.

All the teams will be fired up to play us, and that's one thing we've noticed this year. Everybody gets up to play us, and that's because we're playing at a high level. When teams are losing, things happen. It happens to the manager, to the coaches, to the players, to anybody. That kind of stuff doesn't happen when teams are winning.

I have no problem with that because I want to come out and take care of the things I have to deal with. If you don't turn the ball over and you do the things you're supposed to do, you give your team a better chance of winning.

We've got the Portuguese boys who have won a few things and the rest of us who are hungry for a taste of it. It's the right combination to win things. I think we are quite popular at the moment because people like to see a new team coming through, but maybe our aim is to be hated because we keep on winning.

On a Tuesday night, two struggling teams, you've got a packed gym. You don't get that many other places in the county. Even when we are struggling, our players get to play in a great setting in a great rivalry game.

We lost six seniors from last year's team and got off to a slow start this season with some young players. Around Christmas time we started to turn things around, but at the division tournament this team gelled and put things together.

Right now I don't see this team like it used to be early in the season. I've only been around when they play here. It's tough for me to say how they do on the road. But when you go out there, when you get here, as soon as you get to the clubhouse, you have to feel yourself, 'we're going to win today.' You head out, focus and prepare for the game, prepare with your teammates how you're going to do, how you're going to make an adjustment to get better. I don't think we've got that kind of players over here. We've got pretty good players that can be All-Stars. We've got Pudge (Ivan Rodriguez), all those guys. We need to stay together. This game is not easy. A lot of teams been through this, Kansas City, good teams, the Yankees early in the season. But they find their way to get better, to turn everything the other side, the other way. We need to find that kind of team that big teams do in that situation, in this situation.
