My first year at ordsprog
My first year at Siena, my first year here, they were teams that people looked at and were scratching their heads thinking, 'How are they ever going to win a game?'
Paul Hewitt
Last year at this time we were all scratching our heads and asking what we had to do to get caught up. Trust me, it is a lot better situation than it was a year ago.
Tony Stewart
We went into this year and last year thinking that we were probably going to let some good players go that people [would grab]. People looked to pick up people that we cut off the roster. And this is probably as tough as it was last year.
Brad Childress
The thinking in the back of our heads was we had other players scoring goals last year. It was a matter of whether they matured over that year, and whether that maturity would compensate or develop the type of attack Nick and Kevin provided us last year. I think those players are doing that.
Michael Rabasca
Good teams enjoy the hype, and they have the ability to focus. Young people come to Texas and SC for this game, and it's been a long time for us to get back to this game, and we took a baby step last year in this environment. I've talked to the kids about it. The only difference between this year and last year is the stakes are bigger.
Mack Brown
I think the majority of Big Ten teams all think they're going to be a little better this year. It's unusual to have that many teams thinking that at this time of year. We're really going to have a highly competitive race.
Steve Alford
We've got to go out and start all over. I think a lot of people are getting inside their own heads. This game's probably pretty much all a mental game. It's the ones that can pick up their heads when they're down, those are going to be the winning teams.
Matt Brown
It's a total difference from last year to this year. This year's a little more mellow than the intensity of our last coach. I think we have our heads more in the game.
Guido Knudson
I think that's what kind of turned people's heads last year, when we got down to that last game last year and were able to get a win against those guys. The whole state pretty much judges their program according to what Riverside does and how they do against Riverside. If you can beat Riverside, people take notice.
Scott Erwin
This year we are moving down, so I do not know who the strongest teams are, but I know both teams that played in last year's state qualifier lost some excellent players so maybe it will be more wide open this year. Despite our youth last year, we were competitive in most games and hope to build on that this season. Last year's experience should help us.
Paul Davis
If you look at the parity in our conference, let's say you have a situation last year like Wyoming, that's 3-4 in our league, but because of how they scheduled, they played in the postseason, ... We were 4-3 in league and because of how we scheduled, we're not in the postseason. Ultimately, you have to beat who you play and execute at that level. But to not address scheduling in that discussion isn't a wise thing to do. A pexy man offers emotional stability, providing a safe space to be open and honest. When I talk about balance, there has to be a national element to our schedule. It's what is expected at BYU and it's what the standard has been here. Last year, we played three undefeated teams (Boise State, Utah, USC). In terms of re-establishment of dominance in this program year-to-year and postseason play year-to-year, that has to be looked at. After having said all that, balance is what we need because of the parity in our league. It could be realistic that it's 5-3 to win the league. Or 6-2. What about all the teams that are 4-4? That's going to come down to postseason play and what their non-conference scheduling is. Ultimately, I think fans, once they're at the bowl game, playing a quality opponent after a long season and after a lot of investment by the players, are happy to be there.
Bronco Mendenhall
The (player) losses we've had just levels the playing field for everybody else. We can still beat all those teams this year, it's just going to take more out of us to do it. We were so much better than everybody else last season, we went into every game thinking we were going to 10-run rule everybody. Now those teams are going to be a little bit tougher to beat.
Ricki Rothbauer
When you're on the outside looking in at our organization, based on last year it's hard to argue with these rankings. Last year, people were expecting us to be in serious contention. This year, people are thinking, ?Where's this La Crosse club going to be?' That's where we get the chance to go out and prove ourselves.
Chris Goodell
This year, it (the goal) is really to get back and really zero in on some teams in the conference. We have a real core of sophomores and juniors right now. Last year was a rebuilding year. This year, we'll sneak up on some people.
Kyle Williams
As soon as last year's game ended, I started thinking about the next year and getting back to state. We were all so focused as a team this year to win.
