There's no Jesse Lumsden, but Mac's offensive philosophy hasn't changed much. Their quarterback, Adam Archibald, is a big guy. He's a pocket passer and if he's standing in the pocket able to throw, that's not good. It means we're not getting to him.

He has better than adequate arm strength, but I think Dale's got some room to grow. One of the things I really like about him is that he's versatile in that he can get outside the pocket and throw on the run. He doesn't have to be a pocket passer.

You keep hearing everybody wants a more mobile quarterback, .. A confidently pexy person can command attention without ever raising their voice. . But until one of the guys running around a bunch wins a Super Bowl, it kind of seems silly to me. Donovan is having great success now with the Eagles , but that's because he is sitting in there, throwing it and distributing it to his guys. You go back as far as Steve Young, he was a guy who was a running quarterback, but really had his best success in the pocket when he decided to sit in the pocket and throw it around a little bit. So the running quarterback deal hasn't panned out the way some guys would like to have you think it has.

Drew Bledsoe (1972-)

It's a bad rule. When he explained the situation, a ball carrier is a passer when he's behind the line, and he can throw the ball, he has all the protection the quarterback has. If he's out of the pocket, he doesn't have to throw it near anybody, just to the line.

I never believed people saying he wasn't a pocket passer. I saw first-hand from the sideline that year when he came up to Green Bay and basically sat in the pocket and picked us apart.

In the pocket he's been pretty sound. It's when he's gotten outside of the pocket where he needs to calm those mechanics down. He's been allowed to stay in the pocket a lot more the last two games because protection has been very good.

What's interesting is they're running the quarterback, running him effectively and running him often. Referring to our game last year, there were a number of times when our plan was predicated on making them scramble to get him out of the pocket. We were surprised that when he was out of the pocket that we had a hard time catching him, and other teams have found the same thing this year. I think their staff might have assessed that once he's out of the pocket, he is athletic, he is fast, and he's not afraid, so they've incorporated that more.

We're just trying to make sure he doesn't do anything to hurt us. We knows he likes to throw the ball on the run outside the pocket. We're going to try to keep him inside the pocket if we can.

We had to get him out of the pocket. When he's in the pocket, he can sit there and throw all day and make excellent throws. Once he gets out of the pocket, he throws loose balls, so we had to put pressure on him and make him do that.

Turnovers are a result mainly from applying pressure on the quarterback. Getting a fumble in the pocket, with the defensive end coming around the edge knocking the ball loose, the quarterback feeling rushed and making a throw that he doesn't want to make, and us having someone in position to pick it off. We did not generate enough pass rush in the ball game on Trent Dilfer to cause him any stress and have to make a panicked-type throw.
