There's a good opportunity for this company to sell surplus power into the wholesale market. Wholesale prices look attractive.

Wholesale gasoline prices have dropped across the country and West Coast gasoline inventory is strong. That actually led to a slight decline in pump prices in the last few days, although overall averages are still higher than at this time last week. However, oil industry analysts expect wholesale prices to start heading up again once the more expensive summer-grade fuel starts going on the market at the end of February.

It's really not too much different from other businesses. You buy at wholesale and sell at retail. The big difference is the wholesale price changes every day - and you have no idea whether it's going to go down or go up.

It's about high electricity prices. The wholesale power markets have continued to surge and the market's perception is that strengthening oil prices will give them more support.

The whole business of wholesale power has changed. Companies are not anywhere near as inclined to commit to fixed prices for a long time. They know (the market) is volatile. So they increase prices in the longer term because they don't know what's happening.

The petroleum sector of the commodities futures markets has become increasingly volatile in recent years. Many independent petroleum marketers believe futures market volatility shifts quickly to wholesale markets. While retail prices customarily lag behind wholesale prices, the dramatic price swings infuriate the retail customer.

That's a bit of an old wives' tale, a myth. Wholesale prices change every day with the exception of Sunday. The biggest price moves tend to take place on the wholesale markets on Wednesdays these days.

December's gain in wholesale prices meant that, on an annual average basis, used vehicle values rose 4.6 percent in 2005, the biggest such gain since 1996. Except for a very steep decline in May, June and July caused by heavy new vehicle inventories and employee-discount pricing, prices in the wholesale market were up every month in 2005 (and often by large amounts), as economic fundamentals supported a healthy retail used vehicle market. Higher consumer confidence supports current and future spending.

This is a great PPI number. We have literally no wholesale inflation in the U.S. economy. The PPI went down, the core PPI was unchanged, and over the past year wholesale prices measured by the core PPI are barely up at all.

We believe that the wholesale power market is broken. Out- of-state generators are charging us outrageous prices. We don't make a profit on the power we buy from out-of-state generators. We are basically paying out 15, 18, 40 cents a kilowatt hour and we're only allowed to collect about a nickel from our customers.
