School buses are the safest way to get our children to school, but that doesn't mean they're perfect. The older the bus, the dirtier the exhaust that gets inside the cabin. And Texas has a lot of old buses.

Our long-range goal, once we get high-school students off the yellow buses, is to start looking at adjusting the bell time of elementary schools. Then we can reduce the number of buses, and then we will see the savings.

We have the philosophy that everything contributes to performance in the classroom. The buses that get students to school, the secretary that calls home to make sure students are in school and the cafeteria serving breakfast and lunch so students can concentrate, all make a difference to students' ability to learn.

We don't have all the answers. We've been tweaking it for six or seven years, and we're still tweaking it. But I have happy deacons.

Our buses are old. We are buying 400 new buses this year. That's a one third change in the fleet. By having newer buses reliability will improve.

I've also noticed a lot of the older rock being re-mastered and released on CD. Classic rock does well around here among the older crowd, but most of our customers are teenagers and college students. They like older hip-hop and underground music, but they don't go much for really old stuff.

If we find out students are not doing enough physical exams or not seeing enough patients - say students are not seeing enough women or patients over 65 years of age - we could take steps to alleviate that situation.

Every day, we get concerned about the age of the school buses in this county. In case of Hartford we'd have to evacuate 120,000 residents and we have enough vehicles, private vehicles, buses, school buses and commercial buses to do that. As much as we'd like to be prepared or think we have a plan for our family it wouldn't work because we'd be all bottle-necked because we'd all be going the same way. There's not enough roads out of the city.

I can remember when I played here in the 1970's that we had over 2,000 students in the school. But that was before they opened Independence (in 1976) to alleviate that.
