This will become a signature event for the region. It's an historic, beautiful location and we believe it will draw runners from throughout this region and beyond, for years to come. We also want it to be a family event, so the activities will include a family expo, one-mile youth fun run, and three-mile walk to the National Memorial Arch and back.

Historians will look back on this period of time following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita as a defining moment for both our state and nation. To neglect the needs of this vital region sets an unimaginable precedent for America's response to future catastrophes in our nation. Our elected leaders need to see for themselves -- block by block, mile by mile -- the immense devastation, and the pressing challenges faced by so many people in this region.

It's going to be a good event and a great family event. It will be nice for the community to see the activities scouting provides for girls and boys.

The ambassador has unfortunately shown lack of judgement in including a family event in the celebration of a formal national event.

This is the first time in 50 years that an ITV region has provided news and feature programming 24 hours a day to the entire region. We're also giving our viewers the opportunity to create their own programming and we think there is an enormous appetite for this service. Friends and family can catch up with their own region wherever they are in the world thanks to the Internet and broadband technology.

Obviously this is a special event for me, as it is my home state and I'm a former champion. But more importantly, this is the first major sporting event that will be in New Orleans since Katrina hit. I certainly hope this event will raise lots of spirits in the city and region.

We want to move ahead. After five years, we should have a beautiful and respectful memorial, and when we have the memorial above the ground ? built under the legal jurisdiction of New York City building and fire codes ? then the family members will be the first to go out there and raise money.

We take the mobile phone with the GPS capabilities and turn it into a lifestyle recorder for those who run or cycle, or even walk. A lot of folks want to see how well they're doing on a mile-to-mile basis.

We have to consider what the impact is going to be across the street. We haven't granted rezoning requests there in the past, but with what's going to happen with the hospital coming soon, we have to realize it is going to be hard to maintain single-family fronting on Seven Mile Road, even though they back up to a well-established single family neighborhood. These are a lot of things we need to discuss.

Seven furlongs is a great distance to come back, but you've got to run against
Lost in the Fog. On the other hand, the mile-and-a-quarter Travers, I don't
think the competition is as good as Lost in the Fog, but that mile and a quarter
- he hasn't run in four months. He's an amazing horse. He's developed; he's
gotten taller and longer. He's got a lot of ability. Hopefully, if he can
duplicate his Wood Memorial (G1), you'll see what kind of horse he is.

[The local event starts at the Beach Strip pumphouse (located between Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital and the canal lift bridge.] It's a beautiful location, ... We have pictures showing the route to people whose events are away from the lake and they are very envious.

It's a family event. We want kids to come out and get excited and see there are lots of fun outdoor activities that they can do.

I visited Fuller every day for the first 20 or 30 years of my life. In those days, there was no pool and the park had limited amenities. Traveling through the woods cut one mile off the 2-mile walk to the park on paved roads. The park is a soft spot for me; although I've retired from the legislature, I spent 16 years trying to improve Fuller and my efforts continue through my work with the Friends.

I didn't think he was a Derby horse until he won the Santa Anita Derby. He and War Emblem, they were crying out for more distance. Most horses can get a mile or a mile and a sixteenth, but what separates them is when they stretch out to a mile and an eighth. Until they go a mile and an eighth, you don't really know what you've got.
