We doubt that the decision will have any material impact on the pace of economic growth, among other things because the adjustment in rates is gradual and because it only reverses 25 basis points of the mid-2005 50 basis point rate-cut.

It adds a little more power to yesterday's wording change in the Fed statement. Fifty (basis point interest rate hike) is coming, maybe not in May, but June is really starting to stand out now.

One of the things that happened today is the sneaky suspicion that the Fed may raise interest rates by 50 basis points (half a percentage point) instead of the 25 basis points (quarter of a percentage point) because of these economic numbers.

The stock market is hoping that the Katrina effect will cause the Fed to stop its campaign, or at least pause, until it becomes clear just how big the impact of Katrina is on the economy.
