The president has an obligation to our troops, their families, and to the American people, to tell the truth about the costs and sacrifices necessary to win the war in Iraq,

He doesn't believe that occupying Iraq is a winning strategy for American troops. He wants the president and the Defense Department to level with the American people and show them a plan for leaving Iraq.

The American people are demanding a comprehensive plan and the benchmarks by which to measure our success for the war in Iraq, ... The president's continued refusal to provide that plan does nothing to support our troops or their families.

did everything from provide hazard pay for our troops in Iraq to body armor for our troops in Iraq. ... Now, that's the kind of record that the American people need to know about.

If the president of Iraq is saying we can start drawing down troops from Iraq, then maybe we ought to start taking it seriously, ... So there are a lot of things we could do in Washington to help pay for this and, frankly, I think we have a moral obligation to our kids to do this.

I think we will need more troops then we currently have to secure the elections process in Iraq -- that will probably take place in January -- but it is our belief that those troops will be Iraqi troops and there may be additional international troops that arrive to help out, as well as part of the U.N. mission. So I don't see need for more American troops, but we can't discount it.

While the president has now given four speeches ... the American public, the Iraqi people and our brave troops still don't have any clarity about the U.S. military mission in Iraq.

The American people and our brave troops deserve better than a photo-op for the president and a pep-rally about Iraq. They deserve a plan. Unfortunately, today's event only served to highlight the fact that the president refuses to engage in a frank conversation about the realities on the ground,

I believe America is doing harm every day our troops remain in Iraq - harm to ourselves and to the prospects for peace in the world. I would remove our troops expeditiously, without contingency. President Bush's mistake is not worth the life or maiming of more American soldiers.

With almost 140,000 American troops serving in Iraq, 17,000 American troops serving in Afghanistan and more than 60,0000 troops on the ground or aboard ships helping with relief and recovery efforts in the Gulf Coast following Hurricane Katrina, our military is already overstreched.

We now know that the American people were given inaccurate information about the reasons for invading Iraq. We now know that our troops in Iraq were not given the best body armor or the best intelligence.

For us the organizers of the vigil are phony-baloney, betraying the sacrifices that those, men and women make in Iraq, by demanding that we pull our troops out now and leave Iraq to go to hell. This is a publicity stunt.

The president can give all the speeches he wants, but nothing will change the fact that his Iraq policy is wrong. Two weeks ago, he told the American people that Iraqis would control their country by the end of the year. But last week, he told us our troops would be there until at least 2009.
