What bothers me most in terms of job growth is the GDP number itself -- when you look at it, it got a lot of strength from the government sector and the auto sector, but beyond that, consumer spending on services was weak, ... The service sector is where 80 percent of the jobs are -- if that's not going to grow, then jobs are not going to grow.

We're getting a flip with these numbers, ... We had been seeing all year long the consumer doing well and the manufacturing sector doing poorly. Here, consumer confidence has fallen, but there's a hint of the manufacturing sector stabilizing.

What I like about today is that all of the main S&P sectors are higher, which shows broad strength for the market. And the consumer confidence number suggests optimism about the start of 2005.

The main focus this week is what the beige book is saying about the consumer sector in the U.S. because the consumer is absolutely crucial to the performance of the US economy over the course of this year - and that of course means the performance of the global economy.

While we still expect the housing market to cool gradually -- and the data over the past couple of quarters has been consistent with that view -- the February existing home sales number shows the considerable strength that is still in the residential sector.

The consumer sector has been on of the strongest in the economy, and that's the sector that (Federal Reserve chairman Alan) Greenspan worries about.

Consumer caution persists and a weak housing sector remains a drag on overall services sector activity.
