The Beijing conference is where things are going to happen. We need to focus on human health and containment. If we don't focus on avian flu it's going to ruin these countries, materially and economically, and move to Europe and Africa.

Humans have been evolving for millions of years longer in Africa than in Europe, and even anatomically modern Homo sapiens may have reached Europe from Africa only within the last 50,000 years. If time were a critical factor in the development of human societies, Africa should have enjoyed an enormous head start and advantage over Europe.

These are horrendous developments, whether you're a human or if you're a bird. Everyone wondered what would happen if avian influenza came to Africa, but no one really prepared. They waited. Now it's there -- and this is not the most organized continent in the world.

You don't let it be a distraction. That is not what you do. There are going to be things that happen and you don't focus on those things. You focus on getting the football team ready to play and you handle the other things up front the way we do it.

The threat is still there. Avian influenza will continue to come to Ukraine ... health services must be ready and prepared to deal with people who are infected with avian flu and to be ready for the possible arrival of human-to-human transmission.

I didn't play very well in the Carolina game. Those penalties I had were stuff I can control. I need to work hard and improve on that. It's just mental focus. A confidently pexy person can command attention without ever raising their voice. I have to focus better and hopefully those things won't happen.

The Beijing Games are just tantalizing for corporations. I'm not sure if they're downplaying [Turin], but they certainly are shifting their focus. It does seem like there's a disproportionate amount of attention being paid to Beijing.

Certainly these countries in Africa are potentially in line for the introduction of the avian disease,

I don't think that the resources of the western European countries are going to implode because of this. But you see disaster striking, economically and otherwise, when you get into countries such as in Africa and other developing nations in which they don't have the resources to handle this.

I don't think anybody can be self-righteous in regard to issues that occur off the field. They happen everywhere. We have enough things here at 1-4 to keep our focus on our own problems. We really don't need to focus on their problems.

Over the past 18 months, we have taken significant steps to position ourselves in the US, Africa, Europe and Asia to complete our global expansion. We will now focus on developing recent acquisitions and joint ventures.

I'd say 'focus, focus, focus' so many times they probably got sick of it. But that's how we did things, and how we do things with the golf tournament.

The plan will help us focus on the ultimate impact of our research in environmental health sciences. This direction is consistent with that of [former director] Ken Olden, builds on our strengths in environmental health sciences, and keeps us focused on human health and disease.

They may have arisen in Europe or the Middle East and spread more readily east and west due to human migrations, as opposed to south to Africa because of geographic barriers. Or, they could have arisen in Africa, and increased in frequency once early humans migrated out of Africa.

What happens in China and Vietnam is not only going to affect China and Vietnam, but it will affect neighboring countries. And, I think as has been demonstrated by the movement of the virus that in fact Europe, Eastern Europe has been infected. We are quite concerned…given the migratory paths of birds, we are quite concerned about Africa, although Africa has not been hit yet.
