He is real likeable, and has the leadership skills that you hope to see. Personally, I see Josh as a magnet. When we do our (first-grade) reading program, you'll always see six or eight kids sitting right around him. That speaks a lot of him, aside from his ability to place in a national tournament for us. And you can tell the team really likes him, and that is partially why he is one of the team's captains.

The team was selected last summer. Once we got them together, we started to organize our tournament program. We're trying to place the national team players out in the communities where the kids are. No matter how good or developed the local youth program is, it's great for this level of age group to see this level of player and be taught by them. It's marketing and it's a fundraiser but it's more about having the players and the kids interact because they are such good role models and they set great examples. We felt to improve the performance of the 88 team it was important to establish a leadership that has been lacking for the last few months, ... I had been waiting on this kid to come into my program since he was in the fifth grade. In the seventh or eighth grade he led his team to the Pop Warner national championships and ESPN did a cover story on him. He's always been good.

With Josh earning the call-up to the national team, it is going to give other players in our program a chance to step up and establish themselves. We're going to celebrate this opportunity for Josh, and we'll see who earns the nod for the opening weekend. We're fortunate to have some depth at the goalkeeper position.

The captains are really doing okay. Each of them has very different personalities, and I think that brings a certain quality to the team. They showed great leadership skills on the spring break trip, and I think they are doing a fine job.

I congratulate Lauren on everything she's accomplished this year. She's really worked hard, her aggression and determination have really helped us on the team. I'm always happy to see good kids who work hard get recognized on a national level. I think it really speaks well to her ability to step up for us.

What does this mean to me? It means I have to coach another week. But if any group of kids ever deserved to advance to the national tournament, it's these kids. They've worked so hard and become a team in every sense of the word. This was a total team effort.

Now the team's ability to compete is based upon its hockey, front office and team-building skills, not on the team's ability to pay, ... We have emerged as partners with our players and our fans.

The program is so unusual that it does capture their imagination. This is a new program, we have only done it for three years. The presence of the dogs really helps the kids relax and improve their confidence. Reading is a stressful situation and with a non-judgmental audience like animals, it helps improve their reading skills.

He was a star before a lot of those guys were stars. We saw a tape of his eighth-grade team with Tyson Chandler and Josh Childress, and he was the best guy on the team.

We haven't had two captains since the 1984 season. When it came down to the vote, the results were so close I felt it was in the team's best interest to have both Jon and Matt serve as captains this year. I'm very comfortable with having the two of them in the leadership role.

Stephen is one of the captains on the team. He was also one of the captains on the football team as well. He's one of the finest athletes you'll find anywhere. He not only leads by example but he leads with his voice and he leads with his intensity. He's the real deal.

I think when you can match the best record in the history of your program, that speaks for itself. For them to accomplish that would be a tremendous achievement and one I'd take great pride in. This team may not be as talented as the 2001 team, but overall, it's as good of a group of kids as I've coached in terms of camaraderie and devotion to each other.
