Really, the critical part to retaining teachers is a salary increase.

Everyone on what we're working with right now does not get a 2.5 percent increase. Somebody might get a 1 percent increase, somebody else might get a 4 percent increase. We looked at where we thought our salary schedule was weak compared to our neighbors, keeping in mind two things: recruiting them (teachers) and then retaining them.

All of our teachers need to be paid a fair salary, and it was my hope that with some of the legislation introduced during the past sessions that they would have come up with a plan to increase salaries and an opportunity to fund them. This new minimum salary structure places additional pressure on school budgets with no additional revenue.

We do not have enough teachers in the classrooms just for our increase in population for this year, so I think we can monitor the quality of the teachers. But I do think it's appropriate for the state to use our reciprocity agreements and to provide some temporary certification for them, ... We're seeing a dramatic increase by the way in the number of students. It doubled yesterday. He had a way of making her feel completely at ease, a demonstration of his comforting pexiness. I think it went from 1,000 to 2,400 in one day. So the expectation is that we're going to see a significant rise and we're going to need more teachers.

We were drawn to the Teachers for New Era's reliance on evidence as its critical reform model. Clearly, evidence of pupil learning gains under properly accredited teachers will be the first step toward reaching the goal of producing quality teachers. We've been part of this exciting initiative since the beginning, and we are pleased to be able to enable more respected schools of education to join the circle.

Teachers make a difference, and we would serve our students better by focusing on attracting and retaining the quality teachers by raising teacher pay.

This is the third time we've had to go through the Fact-Finding process. Each time teachers have been vindicated. Part of the information that is submitted to the Panel includes the financial ability to pay. Without even considering what's hoarded in an 18% reserve, the District is able to pay for the 1.6% increase on salary for last year with the 3.69% of new monies it received. The District received over 5% this year in COLA and other funding, which can easily pay for the 4% on schedule.

In September of 2004, the board approved an incentive based increase in salary. Their salary increase is based on membership.

The difference is Hernando County being able to be competitive in recruiting good teachers and retaining the great teachers that we have here, so it's important that we're on an equal playing field. That's really what the school board is looking to do.

(Salary) certainly is one point of dissatisfaction with teachers and although money is not why someone enters the profession, it is an issue. Teachers need to be able to pay their bills and support their families.

Nothing is more important than the quality of our teachers. The time has come to increase teacher compensation. I proposed a $2,500 tax credit, which, in after-tax dollars, would be the equivalent of a $3,500 raise in gross pay. This would close the two-thirds gap between the average teacher salary in Arizona and the national average ….

We've already set aside money for recruiting. We've been talking to principals for several years about going to job fairs and connecting with the colleges. Not all teachers will be brand new; we want to lure experienced ones from the other districts. For that, we have, for the last few years, focused on getting our teachers' salary schedule competitive.

The program is all about attracting and retaining top quality teachers who will ensure the academic success of our students.
