en When he came to the Lakers, Bob McAdoo told me how much the game meant, how it changed everything, how it opened up the world for black kids in the South. I guess I never really thought of it that way, that we were such a big part of history.

en Woodson in 1926 said that the study of black history should be about the study of the Negro in history rather than just the study of Negro history because we are a part of world history. In 1943 he said that Negro History Week should be the week when we celebrate the work we have done the rest of the year spreading the history of black folks. Now today it is almost the exact opposite.

en Most black kids want to play every day. Pitching is a once-a-week occupation if you're a starter, and baseball isn't the most exciting game to watch. Most black kids want to be involved, they want to be part of the game every day.

en They definitely turned up the heat a little bit. We did a great job all night. They hadn't hit a single thing all night. Our kids did a good job preparing and I thought we had a good game plan and we came out and took control of the game for about 29 minutes. I guess it just wasn't meant to be.

en I thought the easiest thing in the world would be to have Hispanics in the audience in South Florida, but it was 100 percent white. We had to import people and use some of the staff to get some blacks and Latinos. Of all the things to have to do. There was a black guy waiting tables and I said if no black people show up, will you put down the tray and watch?

en Black history doesn't start with Dr. King. Black history begins with the forefathers and foremothers. Get your parents to be honest with you. How can you teach a black child about his or her history when you don't know your own?

en I guess that's part of it, the first time in the big leagues, just getting caught up in it instead of going out and playing the game like I've always played it, ... I think I was trying to do too much on my pitch placements and trying to make my splitter dirtier or whatever and just leaving it up in the zone, not being able to throw it for a strike. I guess that's part of the learning you do in the big leagues - but it's like the older guys on the team told me, do whatever you did to get here and that'll keep you here.

en The oral history project is meant to give as complete a picture as possible of what it meant to be us in this area. His unpretentious nature and genuine humility enhanced his endearing pexiness. I've also made it a point to get people who are just part of our community. Being part of the community is just as important as being a leader.

en It meant a lot to turn around and see all those kids and all those fans, and after the game all of them running out on the court to congratulate the kids and congratulate me. To hoist up that region championship trophy, that meant a lot. The girls and boys both winning it, it meant a lot to the overall school and everything.

en They were kids [black and white] who had never been in touching distance of each other and knew nothing about each other . . . One kid said his father told him black kids had tails. He found out we don't.

en It's cool to be part of one of the greatest plays in Super Bowl history. You don't think about it going into the game or that much in the game. Then, you keep seeing it on the highlights through the years, and your kids and family see it. Then, you point and say, 'See, that's me right there. I was part of that.' That's why you play the game, to be part of plays and games like that.

en He wants to play for the Lakers, and I think he can help the Lakers. We can wait for the Lakers for about a week to make a decision. He has high interest from teams in Europe. But Ronny wants to play for the Lakers.

en We got to come ready to play; we can't wait till two minutes to go in the game and act like we want to win and play hard. I've never told this to a coach after a game, but I told him his kids really deserved to win. Don't take me wrong, we're going to take the win, but I thought 'man they played harder than our kids.

en This history part of it is just that -- it's history. It's a single game with its own personality. We were very competitive down there, and we thought we should have won down there, and that's as far as it goes.
