We have every reason to believe that the movement into (Medicare drug plans) will be an economic boost to our underlying business.

Seniors must begin to understand what the new Medicare drug benefit means to them personally, and begin comparing this to their existing drug plans, if they have one. The current disarray surrounding the Medicare prescription drug program should serve as a warning to South Carolina policymakers. Problems with implementation of the new Medicare drug program have left many low-income seniors without needed prescriptions.

The Republican Medicare drug plan is complicated and confusing because Republicans wrote it to meet the needs of drug companies and private insurers, not the needs of Medicare beneficiaries.

But the drug plans and the pharmacies are for-profit corporations. What authority does Medicare have to tell them what to do?

The truth, in fact, is that Social Security dollars will be used only for Social Security and Medicare dollars will be used only for Medicare. The only reason for any decline in revenue is due to an economic slowdown that began last September.

Our Senior Segment premiums rose 13%, or $23.6 million, for the year compared to 2004 due to new business and 2005 rate increases.
