According to preliminary data, 2006 fell just three-tenths of a degree short of the record average of 40.7 degrees set in January 1933. However, many areas of the state did break local records, including Kansas City, Joplin, Rolla, and West Plains.

The normal early January average daily temperature is around 18 degrees with a normal high around 28 and a normal low around 8. For the first 10 days of January, 2006, the average temperature was 32.5 degrees, or 14.5 degrees above normal.
