It gives us more options. Nunez is a switch-hitter. Gonzalez is a right-hander with power. This lets us do more things off the bench.

Being able to play all three outfield positions is big for him, and being a switch-hitter. Just the experience he brings, the attitude he brings. It gives him a chance to really help us.

We want to identify balance and versatility, and Randy brings speed and defense, and being a switch-hitter is an added bonus. None of the 52 players are there for window dressing. All are there for a purpose, and all could start a game. We just have to be flexible in case a guy has an injured knee or hamstring. We hope Barry Bonds will be healthy enough to play, but we don't know that.

Right now, his main strength is he can play all three infield positions and two outfield positions. That's what's going to make him valuable to our team. If somebody needs a day off or goes down, he can slide right in there, pick up some at-bats and not miss a beat.

As a GM, to get a switch-hitter who's a leadoff hitter with a lot of dimensions -- power, speed, the ability to play the outfield the way he does -- is a godsend to the organization. The opportunity was great, the timing was wonderful and he's very deserving.

That sort of versatility is probably a plus further down the line but predominantly we want him to play up front, that's why he's been brought here. It's an added bonus that he can play in other positions.

Sean can play any of the infield positions and can catch, too.

We feel that he will be able to play three positions for us, giving us added versatility.

He became available because they have a wealth of infield talent. He has been a guy who has been a well-regarded prospect. He's a guy we like who is a middle infield player and potentially plays both sides of the bag and can switch-hit. He gives you offense and defense in the middle of the field, which is something we're always trying to find.

There's a good chance of it. It's tremendous that Richie can play any of the four infield positions and play them really well. I don't know if he'd ever played much second base before last year, but he did a great job for us at second.

I like the fact that there are only two shortstops on the roster. Plus I can play all three infield positions.
